To Mika Brzezinski’s clear consternation, the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and their guest were only able to attack President Donald Trump’s speech in Poland Thursday for its style, not its substance.

“You know, the first half of the speech was packed with platitudes and trite and obvious talking points and was an extremely disappointing speech for anyone hoping to get policy points out of it,” said Joe Scarborough. “Towards the end, though … he actually made news at the final part of this speech and said some very significant things.”

“The first significant note … he said, was the bonds between the United States and Europe are as strong as ever and possibly even stronger than ever,” he said while Brzezinski looked helplessly into the camera.

“He even made a passing negative reference to Russia. He did say later in the speech — and this is a big takeaway, considering what he has not said in the past — that the United States and … the president of the United States stands firmly behind Article 5 and NATO,” Scarborough continued, a reference to NATO’s mutual-defense clause.

Guest Richard Haass, the President of the Council on Foreign Relations, also dinged Trump’s speech for its editing, not its message.

“It was a tedious speech and needed serious editing,” Haass began. “But you’re right. The fact that there was a clear reaffirmation of NATO’s Article 5 is significant,” he said.

“The fact that the Russians were singled out in a sentence for criticism of their destabilization in — in eastern Ukraine — that was significant,” Haass continued.
