Donald Trump stunned Hillary Clinton with a win in the all-important Sunshine State on Tuesday night.

The Republican nominee gains the state’s critical 29 electoral votes.

The election result showed no one was sure about Florida until the election results came in.

Florida was a prime a target of Democratic presidential nominee Clinton. She openly told people that if Trump lost Florida, it was over for the Manhattan billionaire. As of 10:55 p.m., Trump was alive and well as a candidate.

Trump won 49.2 percent of the vote, to Clinton’s 47.7 percent. Ninety-nine percent of precincts have reported. The Associated Press called the race around 10:51 p.m. on election night.

Trump won 4,575,000 votes, easily besting President Obama’s 2012 victory total.

Perhaps no other state was targeted by both parties to this degree. By October, every other day, Clinton and Trump showed up in Florida, or sent major surrogates, such as President Obama for Clinton.

Trump targeted the state with frequent visits. He would often jump to a lead in Florida, then fall behind Clinton. Then polls would show the race tightening up. On Tuesday morning, Trump only had a 0.2 percent lead, according to Real Clear Politics’ average of polls.

But Nate Silver, statistician Nate Silver of fivethiryeight.com, gave Clinton a 55 percent chance of winning on Tuesday morning. It was after Silver gave Florida to Trump on Saturday.

It was a sign Trump had worked his way into the hearts of the Sunshine State voters. Trump has a second home, Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach County.

Trump showed formidable Florida strength early. He beat rival favorite son Sen. Marco Rubio in the March 15 Republican primary by more than 440,000 votes. And he topped 1 million votes.

His campaign also worked closely with the state GOP, which worked to turn out GOP strongholds and also target the Cuban population.
