Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee joined the backlash Friday against the National Review’s all-out war on one of his rivals for the nomination — Donald Trump.

The former Arkansas governor questioned why the conservative magazine would savage the party’s front-runner and suggested it is “completely out of touch with what conservatism means these days.” Two icons of the conservative movement, Pat Buchanan and Phyllis Schlafly, also criticized the magazine earlier in the day on “The Laura Ingraham Show,” as did Ronald Reagan biographer Craig Shirley.

“This was, you know, a fools’-hearted errand on the part of National Review,” Huckabee said during an appearance on the show Friday. “Why would they do this? It just shows, though, that this is the elitists who live in their own little bubble. And they think they represent rank and file, and I’ll guarantee you, out here in Iowa, they are not representative and their views are not representative.”

Huckabee said National Review and other conservative media outlets based in Washington are at odds with the base on a number of issues. They want the Trans-Pacific Partnership, while rank-and-file Republicans do not, he said. Elites tend to downplay the importance of abortion, while activists care deeply about it, he said.

“They’re going to get out there and push for Wall Street bailouts?” he said. “Well, there are a lot of people here in Iowa that never got bailed out.”

Huckabee said the big trade deal supporters ought to be flexible enough to reverse course after watching 5 million manufacturing jobs and 60,000 plants vanish since 2000.

“Let’s don’t defend the indefensible,” he said. “And, I think it’s one of the reasons that people are so frustrated in this election cycle. But, when the National Review represents essentially the interests of big business at the expense of small business, when they focus on what’s really good for Wall Street and not what’s good for Main Street, I think they reveal just how disconnected they are from the voters in this election cycle. And, they miss why there’s such a frustration with voters.”

As protesters gathered in Washington to mark the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion, Huckabee called for using the Fifth and 14th amendments to shut down the procedure.

“We need to be bolder than simply defunding Planned Parenthood,” he said. “We need to abolish and end this scourge that I believe has been a mark of uncivilized, barbarian behavior on our part for the past 43 years. And we need to take the stand that we’re going to be a civilized people. If people want to be uncivilized, let them join ISIS.”
