Going on the unscientific theory that conventional blankets limit the use of human hands, the Snuggie hit the market to both jeers and great interest from consumers. (There was also the Snuggie’s competitor to consider investing in, the Slanket.) Plenty of people bought in to the Snuggie’s kooky appeal; more than 20 million Americans purchased a Snuggie between fall 2008 and Christmas 2009, at between $10 and $20 per blanket. There have even been “Snuggie pub crawls” in which people in blankets drink and cuddle. The Snuggie is proof there’s no telling what people can be convinced they need.
