Sales of marijuana oil cartridges, used for vaping, are soaring — at least in California. Additionally, parents may want to educate themselves about another trend: “dripping.”

Eaze, a medical marijuana delivery service that operates solely in the Golden State, reported that sales of the flower — which is typically dried and smoked — are down, while there has been a 400-percent increase in sales of the vaping oil among its customer base.

Eaze’s second annual “State of Cannabis” report, released last week, explores trends in consumer demographics and buying behaviors. The insights gleaned from 250,000 users on its platform and surveys from 5,000 customers amount to one of the biggest reports on marijuana spending yet.

Researchers from UC Davis identified potentially lethal bacteria and mold on samples from 20 Northern California pot growers and dispensaries.

There are two caveats to the report, however, as Business Insider noted: “People who buy pot using an online delivery service might not be representative of the entire market, and the report also does not reflect consumer habits outside California.”

Still, it is likely indicative of a broader trend. Marijuana oil cartridges accounted for just 6 percent of Eaze’s total sales in 2015, the survey found. In December 2016, that number hit 24 percent. One in five orders placed on Eaze last year also included a vaporizer cartridge.

In the meantime, researchers from the University of California (UC) Davis identified potentially lethal bacteria and mold on samples from 20 Northern California pot growers and dispensaries.

They are warning medical marijuana-prescribing physicians and patients with weakened immune systems to avoid smoking, vaping, or inhaling aerosolized cannabis. Those suffering from leukemia, lymphoma, other cancers, or AIDS could put themselves at serious risk for lung infections if they smoke or vape affected medical marijuana.
