If fashion equals rebellion plus adaptation, millennials have a world of style from which to choose.

Add in one part 1950s glamour, one measure of ’60s cool, a drop of ’70s retro, and stir.

Here are all the ways women of the ages 18 to 35 mix, match, and modernize, announcing to the world their fashion time has come.

Leave it to the millennials to revamp a perennial. The little black dress, a staple in mom’s closet, has given way to the little white dress, the staple of a fresh-faced generation. A lighter, more summery version of the little black dress, it blurs the line between white dress and bridal gown, mixing sass and class.

Hannah from @DeepSouthPout on Instagram wears a white dress with a floral crochet detail that goes across the front and on the edges of the sleeves. Accessories can take this in any direction — from office, to out on the town, to even at the altar!

Scallop edged anything is everywhere, and straight hems are sooooo 1999. Scalloped edges are girly, fun. They add character and dimension to an otherwise plain dress, shirt, or skirt. Perfect for 21st century foxes.

Yes, stripes and polka dots have been around for a very long time, but put them together and everything changes. Ever since Scarlett Johansson and Sarah Jessica Parker started mixing patterns, the trend has flourished. Now, stripes and polka dots are taking the lead in the land of mix-and-match. The two patterns stand out against each other, yet when worn correctly, complement each other’s basic elegance. The combination is young, light, and chic and it looks like (Where’s) Waldo made a new friend.

The midi skirt is a demure, chic counterpart to the mini. The length usually hits right below the knee, creating a modest, yet striking, effect. They are often pleated, or they have a fun pattern. These were first introduced in the 1940s, returned in the late 1960s, and have just made their latest comeback. Remember Audrey Hepburn’s wedding gown? Surprisingly, in a world of crop tops and short shorts, these throwback lengths are very popular.

Two is always better than one, and this certainly applies to two-piece outfits. In this picture, Taylor Swift wears a white two piece with a cut-out pattern along the bottom edges. She pairs this simple white outfit with black sunglasses, and a pair of turquoise heels for a pop of color.

As you can see, these two-piece outfits are very appropriate for the sunny weather.

The Age of Aquarius lets the sun shine in once again with these groovy floral jogger pants.

In this picture, YouTuber and blogger Zoe Sugg, a.k.a. Zoella, rocks them with a pair of classic white Converse. The pants are a more comfortable, stylish alternative to skinny jeans and are great for making an anti-establishment statement. They’re also terrific as a socially acceptable pajama pants you can wear in public.
