The flowers, the dress, the pomp and circumstance — it looked like just a fairy tale celebrity wedding, but it was so much more.

On Wednesday, July 6, Seattle Seahawks Quarterback Russell Wilson married singer Ciara after publicly saving sex for marriage due to their Christian faith. They announced in a heart-tugging post on Instagram: “We Are the Wilsons!”

They appeared on the red carpet at the ESPYs on Wednesday, glowing with marital bliss.

“There’s too many best parts,” Ciara said about their fairy tale wedding day. “But the personal moments that we had superseded all of that for me. It was one of the most perfect days in all of my life.”

“She’s everything you could ever want, honestly,” Wilson said in an interview with ESPN last year. “Funny thing is, I told somebody that’s the girl I wanted to be with before I ever met her. I told somebody, ‘I’m probably going to end up with Ciara.'”

The couple has been very open about saving a physical relationship for marriage since 2015, when Wilson shared this with The Rock Church in an interview.

He opened up on this topic back then: “I’ll never forget: She was on tour. She was traveling, and I was looking at her in the mirror. I was sitting in the dressing room, and she was getting ready to go about 15 minutes before she went on stage, and she was sitting there, and God spoke to me and said, ‘I need you to lead her.’ And I was like, ‘Really? Right now?'”

“She’s everything you could ever want, honestly.”

“He goes, ‘I want you and need you to lead her,'” Wilson said. “And so anyways, I told her right then and there, what would you do if we took all that extra stuff off the table and just did it Jesus’ way?”

Wilson talked candidly about how difficult waiting for marriage had been and quipped in the interview: “I ain’t gonna lie to y’all now, I need y’all to pray for us.”

The openness on this topic from celebrities is rare — but powerful. Hearing this kind of insight from a singer and NFL star sends the message that it’s not impossible to do — and that normal couples can and do wait for marriage.

When the pair talked about it as a couple, Wilson said, “She completely agreed: ‘Could we love each other without that?’ If you can really love somebody without that, then you can really love somebody.”

And perhaps the most beautiful part of this love story is the deep understanding that people make mistakes despite their desire and decision to wait.

“For me, I knew God had brought me into her life to bless her and for her to bless me and to bless so many people with the impact that she has, that I have. We’re not gonna be perfect, by any means,” Wilson explained. “Life’s not perfect. Nobody’s perfect, but He’s anointed both of us, and I know that he’s calling for us to do something miraculous, something special.”

The testimony of this celebrity couple of faith has inspired many — and their respect for each other will give them a leg up when it comes to having a successful marriage.
