Chris Tomlin is an institution in the Christian music category. With a Grammy, 3 Billboard Awards and 12 Dove Awards to his name, he is no rookie in the music industry as a whole, either — and he recognizes a one-of-a-kind song when it comes around.

Tomlin’s newest single, “Good Good Father,” shot to #1 on the iTunes Christian music charts and had an 11-week stint at the #1 spot on Billboard’s Top Christian Songs.

Tomlin has a knack for producing music that resonates with an audience and communicates a serious, devout message. “Good Good Father” follows that trend and calls the listener to realize the true mercy of God.

“Songs like this don’t come along that often,” said Tomlin in an interview.

He continued praising the virtue portrayed in the song before humbly explaining, “I love talking about this song because I had nothing to do with it.”

The song’s co-writer, Pat Barrett, expanded on some of the inspiration for “Good Good Father.”

“I realized this the more I walked with God and read the scriptures and read the way Jesus talked to people about meeting God,” said Barrett. “The language he (Jesus) used was super intimate. ‘Father’ — it was ‘Father.'”

The intimate relationship between scripture and music is perhaps the most beautiful aspect of the song. It calls the listener to realize an intimate connection with God, because He is the father of each one of us.

“Hopefully we do justice to this song,” Tomlin told Barrett in the recording studio. “We prayed beforehand: ‘Lord, please help me not to mess this thing up.’”

From a musical perspective, Tomlin described it as “timeless. It’s classic. It goes beyond style.”

Tomlin has a very clear idea of what he wants to communicate to his fans through his music, and he could not say enough about this song: “It touches people’s hearts, saying something about God as a father, and man in our world, and goodness. More than ever — what a thing to say.”

He’s right. Our culture and young people crave something productive and intrinsically good.

When it comes to believing in God, most of us are inclined to think of the Lord as a far-off being, with very little impact in our daily lives.

But that’s exactly the power and message of “Good Good Father.” God is not far-off at all — but intimately cares about each and every one of us, as a human father does.

Tomlin’s new music video is out now and his song is resonating with audiences everywhere. There is no doubt why.
