A deeply moving moment occurred Wednesday night at the ESPY Awards. Zaevion Dobson — a high school football player who died last year while shielding two girls from gunfire — was given the ESPYs’ Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

The award was accepted by his mother, Zenobia Dobson, and his two brothers, Zack Dobson and Markastin Taylor. “You were and you remain a guardian angel to us,” his mother said.

Last year the ESPY Courage Award went to Caitlyn Jenner for making strides in the transgender community — and the comparison could not be more jarring.

This young man’s actions lacked any regard for his own personal safety. All he thought about was saving others from danger.

We’re focused on Dobson’s act of sacrifice because the type of love and courage he demonstrated through his death is a divine love.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends,” reads John 15:13.

Dobson, who played football in Knoxville, Tennessee, and was only 15 when he died, showed the greatest love a human being can communicate — as well as astounding courage.

The program made a statement about real courage and the amazing sacrifice of one young man.

The description of this award says this: Recipients should “reflect the spirit of Arthur Ashe, possessing strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril, and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost.”

Dobson paid the ultimate sacrifice for his actions, and the ESPY awards succeeded in acknowledging a courage so profound it transcends any televised awards show — or any award in general.

But the decision to give this award posthumously to a brave young man communicates that one person’s life and courageous decisions can inspire so many other people in a positive way.

The ESPYs might just be one more awards show among many — but last night, the program made a statement about real courage and the amazing sacrifice of one young man.
