Three children were killed and a fourth was seriously injured in Indiana on Tuesday morning after being struck by a pickup truck as they were preparing to board a school bus, ABC 6’s The Indy Channel and many other outlets reported.

The accident, which occurred about 7:30 a.m., took place near 4600 N. State Road 25 in Rochester, a northern Indiana town about 60 miles east of Fort Wayne.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Tony Slocum was on the scene and indicated that more information would be released.

The three children killed — six-year-old twin boys and a nine-year-old girl — were from the same family, The Indy Channel reported.

The injured child, an 11-year-old boy, suffered many broken bones.

The 24-year-old female driver of the pickup truck is said to be cooperating with the police, according to the same outlet.

ABC 6 reports that the bus’s “arm” was out at the time of the crash.

The fatal crash in Fulton County, Indiana, involved Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation (TVSC) students, one of whom was seriously injured and airlifted from the scene, TVSC said on its Facebook page.

In a statement made on Facebook and also broadcast on Twitter, TVHS said that school counselors have been deployed to meet the emotional needs of staff, students, and parents.

TVHS added a request for the community to come together to pray for families, students and staff.

“Our school corporation has suffered a tragedy this morning. We have learned of three student fatalities and one student seriously injured and airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital as they were hit by a vehicle while boarding their bus,” TVHS’ statement began.

“We have deployed all school counselors to meet the emotional needs of our staff, students and parents,” the statement continued.

“We are awaiting to learn more confirmed details but wish to ask the community to come together to pray for the families, our students and our staff,” the statement concluded.
