SAN FRANCISCO, CA – A father based out of San Francisco shared an unsettling account of his 15-year-old daughter witnessing a dead body laid out in the open while on her way to school earlier in September, a death this father firmly believes is linked to San Francisco’s tacit endorsement of the city’s “open drug markets.”

Tom Wolf is no stranger to the dangers associated with addiction, as he describes himself as a “recovering addict” who was at points in his life incarcerated and homeless.

Considering Wolf’s background, he was particularly disheartened when his 15-year-old daughter witnessed a dead body on her way to school on September 14th, with Wolf noting that the cadaver witnessed can be accredited to San Francisco’s abysmal approach to addressing drug use and homelessness.

“So I dropped my kid off at the train station this morning to go to school, and she had to see a dead body – a dead body that was there mostly because of overdose. You know, with the yellow tarp over the body as she’s walking by. And if you don’t think that doesn’t cause trauma to a 15-year-old kid, think again. If you don’t think that the policies that are happening in San Francisco right now that allow open drug markets, open-air drug dealing, and people to just camp everywhere doesn’t affect surrounding communities and cities, you need to think again. We need a new approach, we need to stop listening to the same people that keep telling us that this is normal and we should just go about our business. It’s not normal.”

According to a report from NBC Bay Area, close to 1,700 residents of San Francisco have died due to drug overdoses since January of 2020 – a figure the outlet reports as being “nearly double the amount of COVID-19 fatalities seen in the same time frame.”

While city officials have talked a good game on how they’d like to put a stop to street-level drug use and dealing, little-to-no measurable actions have been taken outside of politicians merely acknowledging the existence of a problem.

Wolf also brought up how these issues regarding open-air drug use and dealing have impacted the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco, emphasizing that the issues in such neighborhoods aren’t exclusive to some of the seedier spots of San Francisco, but have managed to find their way over to “the nice suburbs.”

“People should not have to walk by dead bodies every day. How many kids in the Tenderloin have seen that exact same thing? Well guess what? Out in the nice suburbs in the peninsula, we have it too – and it’s not okay. So, I implore you to support changes to our current approach. Stop the open-drug markets, stop the open drug dealing, get people into shelter while they wait for housing. This cannot continue. It is not sustainable.”
