COBB COUNTY, GA – Two Cobb County Sheriff’s deputies were reportedly killed earlier in September while attempting to serve an arrest warrant, with the sheriff describing the fatal incident as his two deputies being “ambushed” shortly after exiting their vehicle.

The incident occurred on the evening of September 8th, according to Cobb County Sheriff Craig D. Owens, while the deputies were attempting to serve an arrest warrant for failure to appear by theft of deception.

“What I can tell you in this moment is this: in plain terms, it is simple, my two deputies were ambushed this evening and killed. The two suspects we believe are the perpetrators of this crime are currently in custody and are being held at the Cobb County Police Department for questioning.”

When the deputies arrived at the residence located at the corner of Hampton Glen Court and Fenwick Drive, where the warrant was intended to be served, Sheriff Owens said the unnamed deputies attempted to make contact with the homeowner and came under fire after returning to their vehicle when no one answered the door.

“From my understanding, the deputies had made an attempt at the home, knocked on the door, rang the doorbell, no one came to the (door). As they were getting back to their car, the vehicle drove up, and they assumed it was the suspect who lived there, and as they got back to the car – as he got into his car – shots were fired.”

Following the fatal shooting of the two deputies, the sheriff’s office reportedly dispatched SWAT and FAST teams to the residence, where a standoff ensued for several hours before the two suspects “came out peacefully,” according to Sheriff Owens.

As of this writing, the two suspected shooters who were taken into custody have not been publicly identified by officials. All that has been shared about the suspected shooters is that the Cobb County Police Department, which is currently leading the investigation, took them into custody.

Sheriff Owens emphasized during the press conference that the prevalence of guns falling into the hands of criminals needs to be addressed.

“We need to do something about these guns on the street, so whatever we can do to prevent gun violence, as you can see, is affecting us here in Cobb and is affecting everyone across the entire United States of America. We definitely need to do something regarding that.”

Though the sheriff didn’t release the names of the two deputies killed in the line of duty, he did share that both had been with the sheriff’s office for more than five years, describing them as “two young bright deputies” who served the sheriff’s office with “dignity and honor.”

Sheriff Owens additionally revealed that both of the slain deputies leave behind a spouse, saying, “it is a night of heartache for two families from the Cobb Sheriff’s Office, two wives who have lost their amazing husbands.”

Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene shared her condolences for the two fallen deputies, issuing a statement that read, “We are heartbroken for this tragic loss. Let us pray for the families and everyone at Cobb County Police Department. Police risk their lives every single day to protect all of us. We must always back the blue.”
