A chilling new development has come in about the shooting that occurred on the set of the Alec Baldwin movie Rust, as attorneys representing the film’s armorer are claiming that a saboteur slipped live rounds into the ammo box.
Jason Bowles and Robert Gorence are lawyers representing the 24-year-old armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, and they told the “Today” show that there was a box of bullets on the set labeled as dummy rounds that their client pulled from to load the gun.
“I believe that somebody who would do that would want to sabotage the set, want to prove a point, want to say that they’re disgruntled, they’re unhappy,” Bowles said. “And we know that people had walked off the set the day before.”
When asked if he thought a crew member could be a suspect, Bowles replied, “I think you can’t rule anybody out at this point.”
“We know there was a live round in a box of dummy rounds that shouldn’t have been there,” Bowles explained. “We have people who had left the set, who had walked out because they were disgruntled. We have a time frame between 11 (a.m.) and 1 (p.m.), approximately, that day, in which the firearms at times were unattended, so there was opportunity to tamper with this scene.”
Gorence chimed in to say that the film set’s prop ammunition was in a truck “that was completely unattended at all times, giving someone access and opportunity.”
Gutierrez-Reed said last week that she does not know how the live bullet that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins got into the gun, which was fired by Baldwin. She added that no live ammunition is ever kept on set, according to court documents.
When asked if Gutierrez-Reed’s statement is true, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza replied, “No, obviously it isn’t. That was a live round that struck and killed Ms. Hutchins, so that’s not an accurate statement as far as I’m concerned.”
Mendoza said last week that the investigation into this shooting, which will likely take months, centers on assistant director Dave Halls, who declared the gun was safe, and Gutierrez-Reed and Baldwin.
“Nobody’s been cleared as of yet,” Mendoza said. “Again, there’s three people that handled the firearm prior to the death of Miss Hutchins, so those people will be interviewed, are the focus of the investigation, and so nobody’s been cleared as of yet.”
It will certainly be interesting to see how this all plays out.

since everyone is a suspect per a person responsible for the guns and ammo in playing Clue on this I suspect the cinematographer so it was karma in the end that killed her…well that and alec baldwin.
i shoot blanks for training with dogs and the shells are a different color – shotgun shells. do they brass blanks for handguns/rifles differently from standard rounds like using an orange anodized casing?
If this theory were the case, it would have to be someone who knew the exact calibur to match this particular gun and ammo box.
Just like a Deamoncrat. Obfuscate responsibility for your horrid irresponsibility and try to make uninvolved enemies look bad instead…
It’s the thought process of a child to always blame others around you when you get caught doing something stupid and dangerous.
How can someone employed as an “armorer” not have the ability to distinguish between a “blank” and a live round? It defies belief.
If an armorer can’t tell the difference between a live round and a dummy round, then why is there an armorer at all?
Load of B.S. to try to shift final responsibility off Baldwin.
That EXCUSE is pure bs. A blank looks nothing like a live round. One has a bullet on top the casing the other does not. Blind folded you can tell the difference. I would never do that but you can tell the difference. P S every gun is loaded until you prove to yourself it isn’t RULE 1
A lawyer alleges…. this means less than zero
Yeah, the one who slipped the round in is Alec Baldwin in support of Hillary Clinton. DUH? Murder is certainly not unheard of for a lunatic like him.
I live round cannot be confused with a blank.
Some untrained person who probably NEVER fired a gun? Or never compared blanks and real cartridges?
Also considering the amount of money spent on films I don’t think the cost of have a REPUTABLE gunsmith modify a gun so it will only fire blanks made for the gun so no prodution cartridges could ever be fired…
More BS to protect whoever they know who was responsible. Some clandestine person snuck onto the set to place a live round of ammo in the “box”? Total BS. The staff that walked out were using that pistol to plink at targets between shooting sessions. They forgot to unload the pistol before returning it to the armorer. BTW: The armorer is also responsible. These jobs are a joke.
Last person to touch a weapon is responsible for what happens next with that weapon.
Members of the crew have already publicly stated that they were “plinking” just before the start of filming.
Was told they use love rounds for certain scenes on set, rest is blanks.
Sabotage by employees?
Vendor
Baldwin abuse staff?
Who brought in ammo to gun.
Need to revise update ON set Regs for Guns
(never see on these movies: Expendables, A Team, GI Joe, Cobra, Dirty Harry, Saving Pvt Ryan, etc from past)
BIG difference between a blank and a live round
I am 76 years old and have handled guns and ammo all my adult life and the is no way a live round could be mistaken for a blank! First off, the weight, a live round will weigh more than a blank, secondly the crimp on the blank does not look like a real bullet and third, if it is a wax bullet it should not be used when firing in the direction of a person! I have reloaded pistol and rifle ammo, shot anything from .22 rim fire to .44 mag. and large caliber rifles and shotguns and I am convinced that the only way a live round could make into a “prop” gun is thru poor handling of the weapon!
All prop guns should have a blocker in the barrel to stop a bullet from passing through the barrel!
Alex Baldwin did not check/clear the gun himself. Alex Baldwin knowingly pointed a gun at another human being. Alex Baldwin knowingly pulled the trigger. Alex Baldwin IS responsible for his actions and the death and injury he caused. Period.
OK Then WHO LOADED the single action Revolver ??????…If it was the “Expert” Armorer, …Get a rope !!!!
Everyone who comes into possession of any weapon has the responsibility to ensure the weapon is loaded with the proper rounds. Yes, even the actor who will be using such weapon in a scene.
When you take possession of a gun, you are now responsible for the safety of every one else that is within range of the weapon.
