SEATTLE, WA – Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan has ordered all police officers in the department to receive a COVID-19 vaccination or face termination. The Seattle Police Department said that there are still over 200 officers who haven’t complied and shown their COVID-19 vaccine paperwork.

As of Thursday October 7, there were a total of 292 officer who haven’t complied or proven their compliance. Of those, 237 are patrol officers.

On Wednesday, that number was at 354.

In addition to Durkan’s mandate, Interim Chief Adrian Diaz had given the department an October 5 deadline to provide proof of the shot.

Additionally, there are 111 other officers who have submitted exemption forms and haven’t received a response either way from the City. These numbers are not included in the 292 count. This means that if those officers’ exemption requests are denied,

The department lost around 300 officers in 2020 due to attrition, including early retirements and people transferring or leaving police work altogether, presumably because of the defund the police rhetoric and budgetary moves done by the City.

Prior to the October 5 deadline, the human resources department sent out an email to employees that read, “Although the deadline for submission of vaccine verification forms is October 18th, the department has no choice but to make operational contingency plans based on the information it currently has. Please help the department maintain its operational readiness and minimize disruption to employees by submitting vaccine verifications now.”

One Seattle officer told The Post Millennial “We have no plans of surrendering our rights or going away quietly. This mandate serves two purposes. It accomplishes their (the City’s) goal from last summer of defunding the police by half. Because at the end of this there will be half the officers that we had last year.

“It also weeds out the police officers and medical workers that will not enforce unconstitutional laws, mandates, and orders. Almost all that will be left are officers, that years from now, will say ‘I was just following orders.'”

In an email to employees, Durkan said, “We value each of you, and do not want to lose you as employees. But the people that count on you the most are the ones that need you to get vaccinated.”

Diaz said that beginning October 15, the department will be in a Phase 3 mobilization, which means commanders can adjust and move around shifts as needed.
