The two newest members of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez’s (D-NY) radically liberal “Squad” refused to commit to supporting Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) in her run for another term as Speaker of the House.

Reps.-elect Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and Cori Bush (D-MO) were being interviewed on CNN’s “State Of The Union” on Sunday when they declined to give a straight answer after being asked if Pelosi had enough votes to become Speaker again.

“I am going to make sure that voices of the people of St. Louis are heard and we have what we need. And so you will find out then,” Bush replied when asked directly if she would support Pelosi.

Bowman declined to answer as well, saying that Americans “will find out when my vote is tallied and, again, [I will be] organizing with our community to figure out what’s best.”

This comes as fears have been mounting among Democrats that the COVID-19 pandemic combined with Pelosi’s shrinking majority could cost her the speakership.

“Let’s say, just theoretically, we had six or eight people out with COVID and the Republicans have none. They probably could elect [Kevin] McCarthy,” Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY) told The Hill this past weekend.

Supporters of Pelosi in the House have said that a potential coronavirus outbreak stemming from gathering over the holidays would pose the biggest threat to her future as speaker.

“We’re in a health care crisis, right? No one can get sick. That’s the X-factor here,” said one House Democrat, a Pelosi ally, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “We need everyone to be healthy. … That’s the big fear.”

Ocasio-Cortez herself has made no secret of the fact that she would like to see someone else take over the speaker position.

“I do think we need new leadership in the Democratic Party,” she said earlier this month. “I think one of the things that I have struggled with, I think that a lot of people struggle with, is the internal dynamics of the House has made it such that there [are] very little options for succession.”
