Chris Matthews, the host of MSNBC’s “Hardball,” has a different feeling running down his leg these days — one of dread.

Matthews warned the Democrat Party that it is being pulled so far to the Left by freshman congresswomen and radical socialists that President Donald Trump could win re-election by a landslide.

Following a rundown of today’s progressive agenda — such extreme measures as abolishing the electoral college, supporting late-term or post-birth abortions, and advocating for open borders — Matthews wondered how it would play out with voters in key swing states.

He then foresaw gloom and doom for the party, just as in 1972, when “the party went hard to the Left” with Democrat nominee George McGovern.

“Everyone enjoyed themselves … The convention was giddy with excitement even if not that well organized,” he recalled, right up until “the Democrats lost 49 states that year to Richard Nixon, who not only carried the electoral college, losing only Massachusetts and D.C., but 60 percent of the popular vote.”

Matthews concluded by explaining his rationale: that a majority of America is not in line with the radical leftist agenda.

“These are facts to consider,” he explained. “One, almost half the Democratic Party electorate is either moderate or conservative. In other words, to the Right of the progressives.”

“Two, independent voters are also to the Right of the Democratic progressives,” Matthews added. “Three, so are the straight Republican voters a Democratic nominee might need.”

In short, selling these socialist ideas will not play out to the average American voter the way it will to the extremist liberal base.

The History Channel says that Nixon won in a landslide in 1972 due to his opponent’s being “an outspoken peacenik whose party was divided over several issues.”

Are we seeing the same thing play out, as freshmen lawmakers pull their entrenched Democrat colleagues further and further to the Left, while others try to fight their efforts?

Extreme Left. The Democratic Party has been lurching further to the Left ever since the 2016 election. A good portion of its wild ideas revolves around Hillary Clinton’s loss to President Trump.

Mostly, it consists of a temper tantrum that seeks to abolish American institutions. In just the past year, Democrats have proposed abolishing the Senate, ICE, the electoral college, the Supreme Court, and even the Constitution.

Their main policy driver has been socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who has proposed wild, costly fantasies about saving the environment with her Green New Deal, and bankrupting the nation with Medicare for All, free college tuition, and guaranteed wages for people “unwilling” to work.

Will the Democrat nominee continue embracing these policies and ensure another Trump victory in 2020?

It sounds like, as of now, they’re all committed to appeasing their base, perhaps to their own detriment.

“Bottom line,” warned Matthews, is that “going into the Democratic primaries is not the same as going to the country.”
