One of Hollywood’s most famous and long-lasting couples is Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn.
The Hollywood couple just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day and are still as devoted to one another as they were when they first got acquainted.
Both appear to have avoided the pitfalls that come with being in the public eye despite the many temptations they must face. How many famous people get married, have children, and seem to be living happily ever after, only to break up a few years later?
In a word, yes. Yes, almost universally so. Not Kurt and Goldie however. In fact, they’ve set the example for happy marriages in Hollywood and raised a lovely family throughout the years.
What, therefore, is their key to success? Well, according to the couple, it has a lot to do with marriage… or rather, the lack thereof.

Goldie and Kurt have been together for 40 years as of this past weekend. During that time, they’ve both achieved Hollywood stardom while still maintaining a strong marriage and devoted parenting style at home.

While shooting 1966’s The Only and Only, Genuine Original Family Band, Goldie and Kurt first met. In an interview on BBC Radio 4, Hawn discussed the encounter. Hawn said, “I was 21 and he was 16,” implying a significant age difference between them.
I found him endearing, but he was obviously too young. Then, many years later, we ran into one other again, and I was reminded of how much I had enjoyed our first encounter. We both swore we’d never date another actor, but that vow was quickly revoked.
They were both single and had no plans to start dating anytime soon. And even though it seemed like Goldie Hawn had it all together, she was having a tough time behind the scenes. According to rumours, she secretly dealt with depression and never spoke about it publicly.
Hawn discussed her history of mental health issues on the British chat programm Good Morning Britain.
“When I was a kid, I fell into a deep depression. “At 21, I was on the up-and-up,” she said. I realize it may seem awful, but it’s really, very tough, and I didn’t really want that.
After Goldie Hawn’s 1969 marriage to actor Gus Trikonis, the pair divorced four years later. She was finally able to get a divorce in June 1976, and just a few short weeks later she wed Bill Hudson in a union that would survive for the next six years.
While shooting Swing Shift in 1983, Russell and Hawn crossed paths once again. This time, Russell’s attempt to woo Hawn began with the pick-up line, “Man, you’ve got a great figure.”
In an interview with Conan O’Brien in 2017, Russell claimed, “I was severely hungover and I didn’t know Goldie at all outside of having worked with her those many years before.”
She had a terrific physique, and I was completely unprepared for it. Therefore, “Man, you’ve got a great figure” was the very first thing that came out. It was unexpected and risky, but she just said, “Why, thank you.”
Goldie and Bill Hudson were already parents to two young children. Oliver, her son, was born on September 7, 1976, and Kate, her daughter, was born on April 19, 1979.
Kurt and Goldie have been together for 40 years, yet they still feel profoundly for one another. And what’s most intriguing about their friendship? Neither of them has ever considered getting a marriage license.
Russell told People that they didn’t expect anything special to happen because of their marriage license. “Forty years just isn’t enough to say, ‘Well, I guess.’”
“Our children got married,” Hawn said, “… Both Oliver and Wyatt are quite content in their marriages. Katie had been married before, but it didn’t work out; now she’s with the most incredible human being imaginable, and I have no idea whether she will ever marry again.
We’ve all been married before, and we all know that it doesn’t always work out. It’s not the marriage that’s the issue. It’s about the people you’re with, the bond you have, and your will to remain that way. You can have it if you want it, and that’s a huge deal.
You have to make sacrifices, but it’s well worth it when you can feel someone’s toes tickling yours at night. In my opinion, Kurt and Goldie are the ideal pair.

Based on the characters they have played, you wouldn’t think they actually could get along, let alone last that long. Good for them!
