Jeff Charles, a.k.a. “JeffOnTheRight,” from RedState, spoke with us at Red Voice Media while attending Turning Point USA’s America Fest on December 19th, where the “A Fresh Perspective” host delved into how his satirical posts on Twitter have been mistaken for genuine news items – rendering some hilarious results when news outlets report his satirical jokes as facts.

This past September, we at Red Voice Media reported on how one of Charles’ Twitter posts literally duped a reporter from the Disney-themed news blog “Inside The Magic” into believing that The Daily Wire was planning on making a Malcolm X film starring Michael Knowles as the black civil rights icon.

Charles admitted that his satirical posts have triggered media reports on a few occasions, which he says winds up exposing the laziness of various media personalities who can’t even bother to perform the most basic forms of sourcing and fact-checking.

“I have had a few of my satirical tweets be picked up by media outlets. It kind of goes to show you how people run with things without double checking them first. Because you can easily run a Google search and see that it was a joke – but they do it anyway. But I’ve had them picked up quite a bit…Michael Knowles got a kick out of that too; he started following me because of it. Yeah, that was hilarious.”

Aside from lazy journalists who’ve reported Charles’ satirical tweets as though they were fact, the RedState contributor also acknowledged that the current social climate is so absurd that the line between reality and what should be obvious satire is getting a bit more difficult to distinguish.

“The key to satire is to exaggerate to the point to where people know that it’s not real but you’re making a point. But in 2022 everything is so crazy that, even if I exaggerate, there will still be a good chunk of people who think it’s real – and sometimes those people happen to be in the media.”
