The Biden administration has made it a point to address the growing issues around the transgender community and the supposed inequality they receive in society. Just last month, Joe Biden celebrated transgender remembrance day by announcing that his team would combat the violence and disdain shown towards transgender individuals. While Biden might act like he is accepting of a person’s gender identity, his administration recently updated the requirements for a person to sign up for Selective Service if a draft ever happens again. And it appears that transgender people who were born male still have to register in case of a draft.

When looking that the requirements of the Selective Service System, it has its own section for transgender people. It reads, “US citizens or immigrants who are born male and changed their gender to female are still required to register. Individuals who are born female and changed their gender to male are not required to register.”

For those transgender people who were born female, the Selective Service does not require them to sign up for the draft. Instead, they only need to provide a letter explaining their situation. “Individuals who have changed their gender to male will be asked to complete a Status Information Letter (SIL) request form and provide a copy of their birth certificate.”

The Selective Service website also offered their definition of transgenders, explaining, “OPM notes that ‘transgender’ refers to people whose gender identity and/or expression is different from the sex assigned to them at birth (e.g., the sex listed on an original birth certificate). The OPM Guidance further explains that the term ‘transgender woman’ is typically used to refer to someone who was assigned the male sex at birth but who identifies as a female. Likewise, OPM provides that the term ‘transgender man’ typically is used to refer to someone who was assigned the female sex at birth but who identifies as male.”

It should be noted that the website didn’t address the issue of some states allowing members of the transgender community to switch their original birth certificates to match their current gender identity.

As for Joe Biden, during his speech on transgender day, he declared, “I continue to call on state leaders and lawmakers to combat the disturbing proliferation of discriminatory state legislation targeting transgender people, especially transgender children. As I have said before, these bills are nothing more than bullying disguised as legislation, they are un-American, and they endanger the safety and well-being of our children. I also continue to urge the Senate to swiftly pass the Equality Act so that all people are able to live free from fear and discrimination. Transgender people are some of the bravest Americans I know. But no person should have to be brave just to live in safety and dignity. Today, we remember. Tomorrow—and every day—we must continue to act.”
