Throughout the Black Lives Matter movement, many Democrats supported the group’s agenda to defund police all across the United States, loudly and sometimes violently. As looting, crime, and violence often followed the movement, it seemed that the Democrats, including Joe Biden, simply looked the other way. Take John Fetterman for example, who currently finds himself in a close race for the Senate against Dr. Mehmet Oz. Over the last few months, both candidates have taken a fair amount of criticism for their past stances. But while Dr. Oz addresses his past, it seems that Fetterman is actively trying to erase his past alliance with Black Lives Matter.

With the 2022 midterm right around the corner and the polls close, the Democrats are desperately trying anything they can to get a political edge over the GOP. For John Fetterman, that appears to be altering his campaign website, removing his stance on Black Lives Matter. According to archived web pages, the site used to read under Black Lives Matter, “John served as mayor of a city that’s more than 80% Black, and has championed the idea that Black lives matter since long before it became a hashtag.”

Trying to address the change, Joe Calvello, who is a spokesperson for John Fetterman, suggested that the section was removed “when we updated and greatly expanded our issues page weeks ago. Voters deserve to know where we stand, and we’re proud that we spell out our platform clearly on our website.”

Not all that surprising, this isn’t the first time John Fetterman moved to forget his past. In 2013, the former Mayor of Braddock gained attention for pulling a gun on a black jogger. Reports showed that Fetterman followed the individual in his pickup truck and even detained him until police arrived. At the time, Fetterman believed the person to be the suspect behind a crime. A former city council member, Fawn Walker-Montgomery, declared, “He was a white man with a gun chasing a black man. I used to be on the council in McKeesport, and if I chased after a person with a gun, I would still be in jail. He’s showing he’s not aware of his white privilege.”

While John Fetterman removed the statement from his site, in June, he once again, showed support for Black Lives Matter. He tweeted, “Today we celebrate emancipation + reflect on the long shadow of systemic racism in America. PA always stands by the unshakeable truth that Black families matter + Black lives matter.”

Back in 2016, John Fetterman explained how he had the same worldview as Black Lives Matter. “I never positioned myself as anti-establishment. In fact, I was the only elected official in my race, I point out. Katie McGinty never held elected office and [Joe] Sestak’s only elected office was a term, I believe, in Congress before he started running. So this idea that I was anti-establishment – I just ran on what I felt were important, common sense issues whether that was a living wage, marijuana legalization, a Black Lives Matter kind of worldview, but also a community policing.”
