WESTMEATH, IRELAND – A high school teacher in Ireland was reportedly sent to the Mountjoy Prison earlier in September after the individual continued to teach at the school despite him being barred from the classroom over his refusal to use “they/them” pronouns for a purported transgender student.

Enoch Burke, whose is a self-admitted evangelical Christian, had apparently been suspended from teaching at Wilson’s Hospital School in late August after he reportedly refused to entertain the principal’s request that he refer to a biologically male student with “they/them” pronouns.

After being suspended, Burke reportedly continued to show up to teach his class, which eventually resulted in the school obtaining an injunction that restrained Burke from stepping foot on school property.

Yet, Burke continued to show up at the school despite this injunction, leading to the school’s board of management bringing the matter before the court again, with Justice Miriam O’Regan ordering Burke’s arrest on September 2nd.

Burke was reportedly taken into custody on September 6th under charges of violating the court’s previous order prohibiting him from teaching at the school, with Justice Michael Quinn finding him guilty of the offense following his court appearance.

Prior to being hauled off to Mountjoy Prison, Burke told the court, “I love my school, with its motto Res Non Verba, ‘Actions not words,’ but I am here today because I said I would not call a boy a girl.”

Burke admitted that he wasn’t thrilled at the idea of going to prison while he addressed the court, saying, “I am a teacher and I don’t want to go to prison. I want to be in my classroom today, that’s where I was this morning when I was arrested.”

However, the high school teacher pointed to the original reasoning of his suspension that eventually led to his present circumstances as being unjust and an affront to his closely-held religious beliefs, telling the court, “Transgenderism is against my Christian belief. It is contrary to the scriptures, contrary to the ethos of the Church of Ireland and of my school.”

For the sake of context, Wilson’s Hospital School is run by the Church of Ireland, thus making the matter of faculty having to affirm transgenderism all the more confounding and controversial.

In the teacher’s reasoning of the entire matter, he informed the court, “Were I to obey the order of the board of management and the order of the court, I would have to accept that sticking by my belief in male and female is wrong,” later emphasizing, “It is not something I will do. It is in violation of my conscience.”

This defense clearly didn’t resonate well with Justice Quinn, who ordered that Burke remain in prison for an indefinite period “until he purges his contempt or until further order of this court.”
