LAS VEGAS, NV – A 24-year-old female Las Vegas Police officer managed to fatally shoot a suspect following a traffic stop that turned deadly earlier in September when an occupant from inside of the stopped vehicle fled the stop on foot and shot the officer in her hip.

The incident started out as a traffic stop during the early morning hours of September 10th along the 3900 block of University Center, where Officer Tierney Tomburo had pulled over an SUV with three occupants for an unspecified traffic violation.

Authorities say all three suspects initially cooperated with the stop and exited the vehicle, but one of the occupants, identified as 27-year-old Gabriel Charles, suddenly opted to flee the traffic stop on foot.

Bodycam footage from the incident shows Officer Tomburo give chase to the fleeing suspect, with her saying, “Hey…hey! Don’t fucking…” right before the suspect pulls out a firearm and lets off a single round, striking the officer in her pelvic region.

Despite the gunshot wound sending the officer to the ground, Officer Tomburo was able to fire off four rounds at the armed suspect, striking him. Authorities later confirmed that the firearm Charles was using during the incident had an additional 14 rounds in the magazine, but the firearm had reportedly jammed after the first round was fired.

An officer on the scene of the incident came to Officer Tomburo’s aid, crafting a makeshift tourniquet to apply to her injury before she was rushed over to University Medical Center for treatment.

As for the suspect, Charles was transported over to Sunrise Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Had he survived the police shooting, Charles would’ve faced charges of attempted murder, battery, resisting a public officer and prohibited person in possession of a firearm, according to officials.

Nevada Department of Corrections data shows that Charles was previously incarcerated in 2015 due to convictions of larceny and battery causing substantial harm.

While the incident was playing out, the driver of the SUV originally pulled over and the third passenger apparently remained on scene. Authorities say the driver was booked on DUI charges, whereas the third passenger was released from custody without charges.

Officer Tomburo was released from University Medical Center on September 12th, where she was greeted by dozens of Las Vegas Police officers who cheered her on as she was being escorted out on her wheelchair. The injured officer, who has been with Las Vegas Police since 2020, is currently recovering at home.

In a statement pertaining to the officer’s recovery, Las Vegas Assistant Sheriff John McGrath signaled that Officer Tomburo is expected to make a full recovery and return to duty in the future, saying, “She is at home, but in a lot of pain. But we have every hope that she’ll be back to work as soon as possible.”
