LAS VEGAS, NV – A Democratic official serving as a representative of Clark County was reportedly arrested in connection to the fatal stabbing of a local investigative journalist who’d previously written reports portraying the Democratic official in a not-so-favorable light.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on September 7th, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo confirmed the arrest of 45-year-old Robert Telles, a Clark County public administrator, for allegedly killing 69-year-old Las Vegas Review-Journal investigative reporter Jeff German earlier in September.

As noted in previous reporting, a search warrant was executed at Telles’ home on the morning of September 7th after police identified the Democratic official as a suspect in the fatal stabbing of German, who was found dead outside of his home located along the 7200 block of Bronze Circle on the morning of September 3rd.

Prior to German’s untimely passing, he’d spent the past few months writing a number of reports about Telles, none of which were apparently flattering ones.

In a series of Twitter posts from this past June, Telles had specifically called out German’s reporting, accusing the investigative journalist of “slinging 100 pounds of BS.”

The now-accused murderer also appeared to have blamed his loss in the Democratic primary on German’s reporting in a Twitter post from June 17th that read, “Does the [Las Vegas Review-Journal] know that [Jeff German] may be doing double duty on their dime? Do they know he basically made a veiled threat to make me take down my site with the truth after I already lost the election?”

Aside from the apparent bad blood between Telles and the victim, authorities were apparently alerted to a vehicle in Telles’ driveway that had matched the description of the vehicle observed at the scene of the fatal stabbing.

On the day the search warrant was executed at Telles’ residence, the GMC Yukon Denali was believed to be tied to the murder, and one other vehicle was towed away from the property at approximately 12:50 p.m.

Local reports indicate that Telles had arrived back at his home at around 2:20 p.m. on September 7th after being interviewed by police while “wearing what appeared to be a white hazmat suit,” all the while avoiding questions from reporters as Telles entered the home through his garage.

The presence of the white hazmat suit suggests that the clothes Telles was wearing were taken into evidence.

Sometime after Telles arrived back home, police surrounded the Democratic official’s residence and took him into custody.

According to the late investigative reporter’s outlet, the decedent had recently filed a public records request for text messages and emails exchanged between Telles and three other county officials, identified as Assistant Public Administrator Rita Reid, estate coordinator Roberta Lee-Kennett, and consultant Michael Murphy.

Investigators are slated to provide further details on the case on September 8th, with Telles also having his initial court appearance that same afternoon.

Las Vegas Review-Journal Executive Editor Glenn Cook issued a statement in light of Telles’ arrest, noting his relief that the suspect has been taken into custody while additionally expressing outrage that one of his colleagues “appears to have been killed for reporting on an elected official.”

“The arrest of Robert Telles is at once an enormous relief and an outrage for the Review-Journal newsroom. We are relieved Telles is in custody and outraged that a colleague appears to have been killed for reporting on an elected official. Journalists can’t do the important work our communities require if they are afraid a presentation of facts could lead to violent retribution. We thank the Las Vegas police for their urgency and hard work and for immediately recognizing the terrible significance of Jeff’s killing. Now, hopefully, the Review-Journal, the German family, and Jeff’s many friends can begin the process of mourning and honoring a great man and a brave reporter.”
