Sixty years ago, former President John F. Kennedy set his eyes on the moon when he delivered a historic speech, calling for America to reach the moon by the end of the decade. While Kennedy would not live to see the moment, Americans kept his legacy and dreams alive by stepping foot on the moon in July 1969. Wanting to honor his legacy while promoting his own administration, Joe Biden recently traveled to Boston to give a speech at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. Instead of focusing on the moon, Biden set his sights on cancer, which kills around 600,000 Americans a year. Hoping to cut that number in half over the next 25 years, Biden showcased his new agenda named Cancer Moonshot.

Speaking on the new agenda, Biden revealed that Cancer Moonshot was one of the reasons he ran for office. He even harped on how cancer does not discriminate between blue and red. “I give you my word as a Biden: This Cancer Moonshot is one of the reasons why I ran for President. It’s part of my Unity Agenda that I laid out in my State of the Union Address to rally the American people to work together. Because we know this: Cancer does not discriminate red and blue; it doesn’t care if you’re a Republican or a Democrat. Beating cancer is something we can do together. And that’s why I’m here today.”

Joe Biden eventually turned his focus to how scientists are looking at the mRNA technology to help fight cancer. That’s right, the same technology behind the COVID-19 drug is now being tested for the effects it could have on cancer. It apparently doesn’t matter that the COVD-19 drug has done little at stopping the virus from spreading. Biden admitted in the video above, “to prevent cancers; scientists are exploring whether mRNA vaccine technology that brought us safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines could be used to stop cancer cells when they first arise. To target the right treatments, we’re learning more about how to use genetics, immune response, and other factors to tell which combinations of treatments are likely to work best for each individual.”

Beyond his new Cancer Moonshot initiative, Joe Biden added that he was calling on the Defense Department and NASA to help as well. “I’ve also formed a new Cancer Cabinet that is driving a whole-of-government effort to unleash every possible asset within our power — from NASA, that knows more about radiation than any doctor does; to the Defense Department, that has the ability to calculate; and to the Energy Department — do a million billion calculations per second.”

The newest agenda from the White House comes just a few weeks before American voters go to the ballot box for the 2022 midterm elections.
