LEXINGTON, KY – According to reports, a former Democratic state representative out of Kentucky was arrested earlier in August for allegedly raping a woman back in April in a downtown Lexington hotel.
John Tilley, who served as a Democratic State House member from 2007 to 2015 before moving on to serve as Justice and Public Safety Cabinet secretary from December 2015 through 2019, turned himself into authorities on August 8th regarding a charge of first-degree rape.
Authorities claim that 53-year-old Tilley raped the victim during an encounter that occurred at a hotel on April 15th, where the victim was allegedly too intoxicated to consent to any sexual activity. The identity of the alleged victim has not been shared by officials.
Tilley reportedly posted a $25,000 cash bond on the evening of August 8th following his arrest, with him having had his arraignment scheduled for the morning of August 9th.
Few details regarding the accusation outside of the charge, date the offense allegedly occurred, and general circumstances in which the act transpired have been shared by officials as of this writing.
Attorneys Christopher Spedding and Steve Schroering, who are representing Tilley, issued a statement on August 8th in response to the charge, asserting that their client is innocent of the charge being levied.
“Mr. Tilley maintains his innocence of any criminal wrongdoing and has fully cooperated in the investigation. He respects the court process and will have no further comment at this time.”
As fate would have it, during Tilley’s time as Justice Secretary in Kentucky, he was reportedly instrumental in implementing a new rape kit law that went into effect in the state back in 2017.
The Courier Journal reported on the SAFE Act back in February of 2017, noting that the legislation that had been passed in the previous session aimed “to prevent a rape kit backlog from ever forming again,” by way of streamlining the evidentiary process regarding rape kits.
In other news relating to prominent Democrats getting enveloped in the criminal justice system, new details have emerged regarding House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband’s arrest that occurred back in May.
On May 28th, 82-year-old Paul Pelosi was arrested and later hit with two charges stemming from a DUI crash that wound up injuring another driver. Court documents revealed that arresting officers observed Pelosi slurring his speech and having difficulty maintaining his balance while being interviewed at the scene of the crash, with the aroma of alcohol “emanating from his breath.”
What is of particular concern regarding Pelosi’s interaction with law enforcement on the scene is the perception that he was trying to swing around his influence when he reportedly handed officers both his driver’s license and a “11-99 Foundation” card, which said foundation is a California Highway Patrol charity that supports officers and gives their children scholarships.
Apparently, it was later determined that Pelosi had a drug inside of his system at the time of his arrest, but it’s unclear as to what said drug was. Pelosi has since pleaded not guilty to the two misdemeanor charges.
