Border Crossings Hit Record High As Pres. Biden Tries To End Title 42

Since the COVID-19 pandemic was announced with former President Donald Trump in office, the Title 42 policy was put into effect to help the surge of migrants at the border. Under the policy, border agents were given the authority to turn away illegal immigrants under the reason that the United States was dealing with a public health emergency. But now that President Joe Biden is in office, the White House is set to end the policy next week. This comes at the same time that the Biden administration continues to promote COVID-19 initiatives and even wants more money to fight the coronavirus. But while the Biden administration welcomes migrants and fights COVID-19, it appears the end of Title 42 comes as the border had a record-setting month when it came to…illegal immigrants.

Sharing the information on Twitter, Bill Melugin tweeted, “BREAKING: There were 234,088 migrants encountered at the Southern border in April, per a DHS court filing today. That’s the highest number in DHS history. 117,989 migrants were released into the U.S. in April. 113,248 were removed, including 96,908 expelled via Title 42.”

Back in April, Melugin shared another tweet about the crisis at the Southern border. “This means there have been 1,026,460 encounters in the first 6 months of FY’ 22, which began on 10/1. In the first 6 months of record setting FY’21, there were only 570,826  encounters.”

While opposing the move, some Republicans filed a lawsuit, arguing, “Revoking Title 42 will create an unprecedented surge at the southern border and it will overwhelm law enforcement agencies and non-governmental organizations as well. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, (DHS), estimates getting rid of Title 42 will result in as many as 18,000 migrants per day – which could mean 540,000 migrants in a single month.”

In Missouri, Attorney General Eric Schmitt added, “In a lawsuit originally filed by Missouri, Louisiana, and Arizona, our Office just obtained a temporary restraining order to keep Title 42 in place. This is a huge victory for border security, but the fight continues on.”

With the Biden administration still moving forward, it seems the Republicans are already taking steps to protect the border not only from a surge of migrants, but from President Biden as well.
