Just sworn into office New York City Democrat Mayor Eric Adams is no conservative. Conservatives are politically non viable in NYC, Republicans almost powerless as well. The days of Rudy are long gone, as the City is a preserve of miscreants and limousine liberals. Most of the interesting and decent people have left for warmer and less terrorizing climes.

But when a polity becomes a one party state factions will develop in the party. So as NYC goes, at least on law and order, Adams is about as conservative as it’s going to get.

The former transit police officer and Borough President of Brooklyn is a black Democrat. Which means he’s obliged to follow some of the BLM Marxist agenda on race. But when it comes to policing he may prove a pleasant surprise. We’ll see. He certainly takes over with a job on his hands.

Former Marxist Mayor Bill Deblasio left the City worse after his 8 years in office. Everything he touched turned to excrement and Covid didn’t help. Of course, as fear is the way the hard Left governs, he went way overboard on mask and vaccine mandates. That left an already crippled city on life support. So sad because New York was once the center of the universe. It was the financial, intellectual, and cultural capital of the Western world.

But that was when Don Draper strode its streets. After the ungovernable 70s and 80s sanity was restored to NYC by Rudy and Bloomberg. But like a dog to vomit, the natives couldn’t help themselves and elected to advance PC chaos and a trendy Marxist regime at city hall. The damage was done and the City, because of that and the virus, may never recover its cosmopolitan lifestyle. As for its former world glory? Fougeddaboudit.

A female cousin who is married to a recently former NYC police office got out of Queens last year when the getting was good. They were both loyal New Yorkers. But as they saw their neighborhood decay and he saw criminals run amok in the streets, they booked. They haven’t looked back. Nor should they. It must have been like taking the 2:15 out of Gomorrah. No stops, no passes, no return ticket.

As conservatives and Republicans, it is tempting to indulge in a festival of schadenfreude and hope these cretins stew in their own juices. However, as my dad used to say, “like virgins in Saigon”, they may be few, but there must be a number of intelligent responsible people still left there and it would be churlish to wish them ill. So at least on law and order, we can hope Adams does well by our standards. It would be better for New York and better for America.
