Joe Biden is 79 years old. His polling numbers are abysmal. Trump is now tied with Biden per Latin voters. More people say they prefer Trump’s policies to Biden’s. Some of the liberal press and even SNL now consider Biden fair game. In a theoretical rematch with Trump he could lose. Here’s the latest on that.

FNC: “So, what would a potential Biden-Trump 2024 general election showdown look like? A national poll released last week by the Wall Street Journal gives a glimpse, suggesting Biden with 46% support and Trump at 45%. Biden’s one point edge was well within the survey’s sampling error.” Shows again swing voters hold the key.

In this column we’ve talked about potential Republican candidates in 2024. But what if Joe Biden decides that discretion is the better part of valor and doesn’t take the plunge? What if his numbers continue to dive to Challenger Deep levels, he loses key party support, and he gets a visit from the Hill asking him not to run? If either of those happen, or another unforseen circumstance were to present itself, which pols would be the top Democrat contenders for the open presidential race of 2024?

1) Kamala Harris- She’s the obvious pick and there would be intraparty hell to pay from the sexists and identity politics crowd if she were denied a coronation, “My Gawd, passing over a black woman! It’s simply not done!” But in less than a year in office Harris has developed such a reputation for wrong-footed incompetence that even Bolsheviks may be having second thoughts.

2) Bernie Sanders- At 80 years old and thus senior to Biden, Sanders is no spring chicken. But the old socialist still has the fire in his belly and a constituency of wide-eyed gullible youth who will march for him then forget to vote. His socially marginal base is not enough to get him elected president. However, it is enough to make a genuine ruckus in the Democrat Party and maybe capture the nomination. If that were to happen, no matter who the Republican nominee is, Sanders would hardly crack 40 percent in the general election. Though, that 40 percent of Americans would vote for a socialist should be of great concern.

3) Some moderate- If by an act of God or mass hypnosis the Democrats were to regain their sanity and once again become a party of the center left, then a moderate like Manchin or Sinema could win the nomination. Either could beat Trump, but would lose to most other Republicans, such is the albatross of the Biden administration. It is indeed early for these political scenarios. Though as presidential campaign seasons seem never-ending these days, so does the speculation about them. Stay tuned as the picture clears for 2024.
