Cardiothoracic surgeon and television host Dr. Mehmet Oz shocked many of his fans this week when he announced that he is running for United States Senate in Pennsylvania as a Republican. In an interview last night, Oz opened up about why exactly he decided to run.

Oz told Fox News host Sean Hannity that after being born to Turkish immigrants, he was given “unparalleled opportunities” in the U.S., and he feels that “it is time to repay my debt.”

“America is in crisis, that’s not news, our values are under attack – so I want to serve America in its time of need,” said Oz, who went on to express his frustrations with the current political leaders in Pennsylvania.

Oz also stated that his medical expertise will come in handy amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, as he can clearly see how leaders mishandled it.

“I’ve spent a lot of time trying to understand what went wrong and it’s emblematic of other issues we are struggling within our great country,” Oz explained. “Remember the phrase two weeks to flatten the curve? That metastasized into this terrible authoritarianism and overreaching that did not make us safer.”

“People with big yards told people with no yards to stay indoors because that’s where the virus was. Some closed the parks, shamed people about beaches — and now threatening the same overreach with the Omicron [variant] ….” he added.

After praising, Donald Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 jab development, Oz made it clear that he is against mandates and feels that Americans should have the right to choose whether or not to get the shot.

“I think those choices should be yours, the American people’s,” he said. “I’ve fought to empower my audience, my patients, and now the people of Pennsylvania. Every choice I make will be serving the citizens of Pennsylvania and the United States and none of them will serve the special interests in Washington, many of which I have been at war at my entire career.”

Oz then said that he previously “took on Big Pharma… and have scars to prove it,” and that he is a strong supporter of law enforcement. He went on to tell Hannity that when it comes to education, he thinks that the government should stay out of it.

“So you need choice so you can make sure you can take kids where you need to be – you need local rule… and you need to have your values defended,” he said.
