As the holidays are right around the corner, the Democrats and White House are already preparing for the influx of travelers coming in from other countries. On Monday, the White House decided to update their restrictions when it comes to international travel and the COVID-19 vaccine. Already having difficulty making Americans get the vaccine, the Biden administration believes it might be easy to convince visitors. 

Before the updated list, the White House stated, “Starting on November 8, non-citizen, non-immigrant air travelers to the United States will be required to be fully vaccinated and to provide proof of vaccination status prior to boarding an airplane to fly to the U.S.”

While making the vaccine mandatory, the Biden administration admitted it would allow some unvaccinated travelers to come into America, but that list was small. 

Currently, the main exception for the COVID-19 vaccine was being extended to children under the age of 18. 

The White House noted, “certain COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial participants, those with medical contraindications to the vaccines, those who need to travel for emergency or humanitarian reasons (with a U.S. government-issued letter affirming the urgent need to travel), those who are traveling on non-tourist visas from countries with low-vaccine availability (as determined by the CDC), and other very narrow categories.”

As mentioned above, the vaccine is just the beginning of the new requirements, as unvaccinated travelers will have to agree to get the vaccine if they wish to stay in the country for over 60 days. The guidelines also included:

  • For those Americans who can show they are fully vaccinated, the same requirement currently in place will apply – they have to produce a negative test result within three days of travel.
  • For anyone traveling to the United States who cannot demonstrate proof of full vaccination, they will have to produce documentation of a negative test within one day of departure.

While the Biden administration might see this as a great way to get vaccinations, Fox News reported that the airlines would have to enforce the new requirement. Airlines “will have to verify vaccine records and match them against I.D., and if they don’t, they could face fines of up to nearly $35,000 per violation. Airlines will also collect information about passengers for contact tracing efforts. There will be CDC workers spot-checking travelers for compliance in the U.S.”
