WASHINGTON, DC – According to reports, Attorney General Merrick Garland assured lawmakers earlier in October that Special Counsel John Durham will be able to continue his probe into the origins of the Russian collusion hoax without obstruction.

During testimony delivered before the House Judiciary Committee on October 21st, AG Garland confirmed that Special Counsel Durham is “still in action” with respect to investigating the roots of the Russia hoax.

The aforementioned debacle plagued the 2016 Trump campaign and presidency until the spring of 2019 when the Mueller Report found no evidence of President Trump criminally colluding with Russia to influence the 2016 election.

When asked by Republican Rep. Scott Fitzgerald about whether Special Counsel Durham will be able to continue his probe without any sort of interference, AG Garland mentioned that the start of the new fiscal year is evidence enough that the investigation is moving forward:

“Let me just say first about the money. We’re now in a new fiscal year, and as everyone knows, Mr. Durham is continuing. So, I think you can readily assume that his budget has been approved.

We don’t normally make a statement about those things, but since he’s still in action, the provisions of the regulation which require approval of his budget for the next fiscal year are public, so I think, you can draw – you would know if he weren’t continuing to do his work.”

Rep. Fitzgerald responded to AG Garland’s answer, saying, “I’ll take that as a confirmation that the investigation is continuing,” adding that he’s assuming that Special Counsel Durham will continue to look into the Clinton Foundation in his efforts.

AG Garland briefly interjected, stating that he doesn’t want to assert what exactly Special Counsel Durham’s investigation is focusing in on currently:

“Well, I don’t want to say what it’s about. That’s up to Mr. Durham. I’m not determining what he’s investigating.”

Concerns over whether Special Counsel Durham’s investigation would be swept under the rug via the Biden administration have been well warranted, as a report from the Washington Post this past August noted that “some witnesses have privately grumbled that Attorney General Merrick Garland should push the special counsel to conclude his work.”

After having been appointed by former AG Bill Barr in 2019 to investigate the roots of the Russia hoax, Durham has since charged two individuals in connection with his investigation – obtaining one guilty plea from the two.

Back in August of 2020, Durham managed to attain guilty plea from Kevin Clinesmith, a former FBI lawyer who acknowledged to altering an email regarding a Trump campaign aide who was under government surveillance.

In September of 2021, Michael Sussmann, a cybersecurity lawyer suspected of lying to the FBI, was indicted by a grand jury. More specifically, Sussmann allegedly lied during a September 2016 meeting with the top FBI attorney about not representing any clients while acting on the behalf of a technology executive and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Sussmann has since pleaded not guilty to the charge he’s facing.
