A new book is claiming that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) believes that the Republican Party is moving away from Donald Trump, who he sees as a weight on the GOP’s chances of reclaiming the majority in 2022.

In their new book “Peril,” journalist Bob Woodward and veteran reporter Robert Costa claim that McConnell referred to former President Trump as “a fading brand. Retired. OTTB as they say in Kentucky — off-the-track Thoroughbred.”

“There is a clear trend moving,” McConnell said, adding that he feels that this trend is going toward a place where the Republican Party is not dominated by Trump.

“Sucking up to Donald Trump is not a strategy that works,” he added, according to Kentucky.com.

McConnell reportedly is confident that he can beat Trump’s “ragtag network,” if one were to ever even come together.

“The only place I can see Trump and me actually at loggerheads would be if he gets behind some clown who clearly can’t win,” McConnell allegedly said. “To have a chance of getting the Senate back, you have to have the most electable candidates possible.”

McConnell also believes that Democrats will try to use him as a tool against Republican candidates in ads.

“I’m not enough of a villain,” he reportedly stated.

This comes after The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump is actively vetting possible candidates to challenge McConnell, as he is determined to remove him from power.

“I think Mitch McConnell has proven to be a disaster,” Trump told The Federalist earlier this month. “He’s not good for the Republican Party as a leader, and I wish I wouldn’t have endorsed him.”

“The Senate has to make a change at some point,” he added. “I don’t think it’s acceptable having him as a leader.”

Trump has spoken out against McConnell frequently throughout the past few months in the wake of the Senate Majority Leader saying that Trump was “morally responsible” for provoking the Capitol riot that took place on January 6.

“There’s no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. No question about it. The people that stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president,” McConnell said at the time.

Trump fired back by calling for Republicans to replace McConnell.

“I think we’re going to do very well. We need good leadership. Mitch McConnell has not done a great job. I think they should change Mitch McConnell,” Trump said in April.

Clearly, there is no love lost between these two. As a member of the Republican establishment, McConnell may think that he’s above Trump and can’t be touched. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if McConnell ends up learning the hard way that messing with Trump is never a good idea.
