Albany, NY – One of the first issues of business New York Governor Kathy Hochul handled when she took office was to change the Covid-19 death toll for the state of New York by adding an additional 12,000 Covid-19 related deaths.

Governor Hochul had promised that her office would be transparent and she felt that it was important that the residents of New York be aware that former Governor Cuomo did not accurately depict the number of deaths from Covid-19 cases. The state now reports 55,400 deaths as a result of Covid-19 compared to the 43,400 deaths that were reported by Cuomo.

“We’re now releasing more data than had been released before publicly, so people know the nursing home deaths and the hospital deaths are consistent with what’s being displayed by the CDC. There’s a lot of things that weren’t happening and I’m going to make them happen. Transparency will be the hallmark of my administration.” – Governor Hochul

The way deaths were reported under Cuomo only included laboratory confirmed Covid-19 deaths that were reported from a state system that gathered information from hospitals, nursing homes,  and adult care facilities. Deaths that occurred in personal homes, hospice, prisons, and state run homes for people with disabilities were excluded from the tally.

“There are presumed and confirmed deaths. People should know both. Also, as of yesterday, we’re using CDC numbers, which will be consistent. And so there’s no opportunity for us to mask those numbers, nor do I want to mask those numbers. The public deserves a clear, honest picture of what’s happening. And that’s whether it’s good or bad, they need to know the truth. And that’s how we restore confidence.” – Governor Hochul

The numbers portrayed by the Cuomo administration are not surprising since many suspected he was manipulating numbers to portray the illusion that he was a leader in the fight against the coronavirus. Federal prosecutors did investigate his data among the number of deaths in nursing homes. The state had minimized the number of deaths in nursing homes by not counting those who died once they were transferred to a hospital. The state Assembly Judiciary committee is conducting an investigation into the nursing home situation as part of an impeachment probe.
