Far be it from us to make light of a murder. But we do wonder about this one. Somebody takes their cheesesteaks very seriously. As such, there is only one place to go.

FNC: “One person is dead and another is in custody Thursday after an argument sparked a fatal shooting outside of the iconic Pat’s Steaks restaurant in Philadelphia, police say.  Investigators told FOX 29 they were called to the popular cheesesteak spot around 1 a.m. this morning following reports of gunfire.

Witnesses that spoke to responding officers say a fight erupted between two men who were waiting in line. Then one of the individuals pulled out a gun and shot the other, FOX 29 reported, citing police. Investigators managed to track down and arrest the suspect near Independence Hall in Center City after witnesses shared the license plate number of the van he fled the scene in, according to FOX 29.”

What was the argument over? The big one in Philly, lived there five years and in the general vicinity seventeen more years, regards cheese or cheese Whiz. The two most popular joints, Pat’s and Geno’s, both use whiz. If you want to go to one or the other, it’s Geno’s. At any rate, the battle over Whiz in Philly could get a guy shot.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer: “Even Geno’s owner Joey Vento, 68, downplays Whiz. ‘To be honest with you, I’ve never eaten Cheez Whiz, and I’m the owner,’ he said. “… We always recommend the provolone. … That’s the real cheese.’ The yellow runny goo, though, is the top choice of his customers, the locals as well as tourists, he said.

American takes the biggest slice at many other places – even another heralded South Philly spot, Tony Luke’s on East Oregon Avenue. Owner Tony Luke Jr. confesses, though, he loves Whiz. ‘To me, it’s always been Cheez Whiz,’ said Luke…. ‘I always say Whiz. I never say American.’ ” Cheese Whiz isn’t the worst and, like Taco Bell, it’s delicious when you’re drunk. But it pales in taste comparison to provolone.

And that’s where you want to go to get the best cheesesteak in Philly, naturally with provolone, Tony Luke’s. When we’re in town, my kids and I go there at the drop of a hat, for any occasion. We’ve been there dozens of times. If you visit, get the pizzasteak with mushrooms, provolone, and onions. Get a side of cheese fries. Use the hot sauce available on the counter with the napkins and utensils. You won’t be disappointed. I mean really, it’s almost to die for.
