Rep. Maxine Waters has paid more than $1 million in campaign cash to her daughter according to reports from the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

Karen Waters has reportedly received over $1.1 million from her mother’s campaign, with $250,000 coming in the most recent election cycle alone.

The younger Waters was paid for slate-mailing services, a rarely used operation in which a consulting firm creates flyers or brochures containing a list of candidates and policy platforms, and ‘advises’ voters how to cast their ballot.

The effort is so rare that Waters (D-CA) is the only politician on the federal level to use it.

Fox News reports that over 160 payments have been funneled from Rep. Waters’ campaign account to her daughter since 2003.

It would appear benefitting from Maxine’s campaign is a family affair.

Fox News reports, “Waters’ daughter isn’t the only family member who has profited from her time in congressional campaigns.”

They cite a 2004 report by the Los Angeles Times which found various members of the Democrat’s family received over $1 million during the previous eight years.

“They do their business and I do mine,” Waters reportedly told the newspaper at the time. “We are not bad people.”

Ethically Challenged

In 2018, Maxine Waters was hit with an FEC complaint about the slate-mailers which have enriched her daughter because other politicians allegedly paid her to be included on the pamphlets.

Rep. Waters had reportedly raked in hundreds of thousands of dollars to add names of other state politicians to the mailers.

Those mailers were described by LA Weekly as “sleaze” and resemble an “official sample ballot” with quotes from Waters explaining her support.

Waters was named “one of the most corrupt members of Congress” in 2011 by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

Ethical concerns first arose from a case that involved steering $12 million in bailout funds to a bank where her husband sat on the board.

Waters allegedly used her position as a member of Congress and a member of the House Financial Services Committee to pressure Treasury officials to meet with OneUnited Bank, a financial institution in which her husband held stock options.

A congressional investigation determined that her Chief of Staff, Mikael Moore, took actions in an attempt to help the bank and violated House standards of conduct.

In 2013, Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson questioned how Waters owns a 6,000 square-foot mansion worth $4.3 million on the salary of a congressional representative.

Waters’ financial gains through sketchy means have been an open secret for quite some time.

Her family benefits in a major way.

And yet, she currently serves as Chairwoman of the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services.
