Since the first social media post made on Myspace, tech giants have been working around the clock to create the next big thing. With Twitter and Facebook controlling the social media space, America has seen just how much power they both have. With being accused of election meddling over the Hunter Biden scandal, social media has now come under fire for not only suppressing the news but also blocking political ads paid for by the campaigns.

When social media first arrived, the world was ecstatic. Finally, a chance to connect the world in a way never seen before. There were no questions asked as America and the world handed over vast control to these tech companies like Facebook and Twitter. What was meant to be a tool for humanity quickly turned into a weapon as these social sites started restricting and blocking content from certain viewers. There is even a theory that social media interference is what caused Donald Trump to win the 2016 election.

One of their most recent victims, The New York Posts decided to drop a bombshell about Facebook over the week that they were intentionally pausing and blocking political ads. Facebook quickly responded saying it was a “Technical issue” that they are working to resolve. Users on the site may have noticed political ads pausing or shutting off while trying to view them. Again, Facebook says this has nothing to do with the current election taking place. While the issue did attack both Republican and Democrat ads, it begs the question of how far we are willing to let social media go before he starts placing restrictions on them.

Hearing the news, the Democrats automatically blamed it on the Republicans when the digital director Rob Flaherty said, “We find ourselves 5 days out from Election Day unable to trust that our ads will run properly, or if our opponents are being given an unfair, partisan advantage. It is currently unclear to us whether or not Facebook is giving Donald Trump an unfair electoral advantage in this particular instance, but it is abundantly clear that Facebook was wholly unprepared to handle this election despite having four years to prepare.”
