Ilhan Omar and a democratic socialist group shared a call by Missouri congressional candidate Cori Bush to “defund the Pentagon” in order to pay for expanded social services.

“If you’re having a bad day, just think of all the social services we’re going to fund after we defund the Pentagon,” Bush, a Democrat running in the ‘Show-Me’ state’s 1st congressional district.

Omar (D-MN), a champion of defunding law enforcement and dismantling the police in her district, shared the tweet with her followers.

Fox News reports that People for Bernie, a pro-Bernie Sanders group closely linked to other progressive groups like National Nurses United and Democratic Socialists of America, also voiced support for the plan.

“The Senate Budget Chair after defunding the Pentagon,” they wrote along with a video of Sanders saying simply, “Bye, bye.”

From Defund the Police to Defund the Pentagon

Omar was instrumental this past summer in drumming up support to defund the Minneapolis Police Department.

“I will never cosign on funding a police department that continues to brutalize us,” the congresswoman said to a cheering mob in June.

“And I will never stop saying not only do we need to disinvest in police, but we need to completely dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department.”

Now Omar, who has predicted Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden “is going to be responsive to the policy positions we are advocating for,” is advocating to defund the military.

Ilhan Omar and the Defund Movement

Omar’s efforts to defund the police in Minneapolis have come back to bite the community.

At a meeting last month to address a surge in violent crimes – which Fox News reports include daylight carjackings, robberies, assaults, and shootings – council members noted there had been a precipitous drop in police action.

Earlier this week, a group of Minneapolis residents filed a lawsuit against the city arguing there aren’t enough police officers to keep the people safe.

“Defund the Pentagon” seems like an odd tact for a party that has consistently warned of a threat from Russia ever since President Trump took office.

The Intercept’s Glenn Greenwald reported in July that House Democrats had joined pro-war Republicans in “restrict(ing) Trump’s planned withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and Germany.”

In 2019, more than 50 Democratic House members issued an open letter to the President condemning his decision to withdraw U.S. troops from northeastern Syria.

The campaign for President Trump released a devastating ad in September which in part highlighted Democrats walking away from their party due to opposition to endless, costly American wars and those who support freedom.

“I’ve always been very anti-war and now Trump is – by a mile – the anti-war candidate,” one walkaway Democrat states.

If Omar, Bush, and Sanders were truly concerned about bloated military expenditures, they’d be backing the more moderate candidate in Donald Trump.
