Horrifying Footage Shows Air Force Vet Being Robbed While Dying Of A Heart Attack

A horrifying video is going viral this week showing the moment a veteran of the United States Air Force was robbed while he was dying of a heart attack.

Just before 11am on September 10, Ray Bass got on a city bus in Richmond, Virginia to go to his doctor’s appointment at the McGuire VA Medical Center. While he was on the bus, the 66 year-old suffered a heart attack, and bystanders quickly told the driver that he had. collapsed. The driver immediately pulled the bus over and evacuated it before calling the police.

Video footage shows a man who has since been identified as Damontea Chappell approach Bass and say, “Pops, what yo name is, pops?”

He then begins searching through the unconscious veteran’s pockets.

“I’m trying to find your wallet,” Chappell can be heard saying. “Where is your wallet?”

Chappell proceeded to steal Bass’ wallet, robbing the veteran in the final moments of his life.

“He was acting as though he was a good Samaritan when all the while, he was a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” Richmond Police detective Greg Russell told WRIC-TV.

Russell added that Chappell stole $200 to $400 from Bass’ wallet. The bus driver told police that Chappell had told him that he was helping Bass so that he wouldn’t be alone. Chappell reportedly told officers at the scene that he was “terrified” and “had never seen anyone die,” according to Russell.

“I’ve been a police officer for 30 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Russell said. “This might take the cake. This is a vile incident that should not have happened. This man deserved respect and was totally disrespected.”

The Richmond Police Department issued a warrant for Chappell’s arrest after reviewing the surveillance footage, and he turned himself in on Wednesday. Cassandra Bass, the veteran’s niece, called Chappell “the scum of the earth, bottom feeders and there’s a lot out here amongst us.”

“Calling him ‘pops’ as if he knew him. He wasn’t trying to help him at all,” she told WTVR-TV. “You could see he was actually kicking him to make sure he wasn’t moving and dead before he went into his wallet.”

“Like most men, he kind of wanted to keep the health thing hidden,” Bass said. “So we didn’t worry and I think it’s why the sudden death has hit us so hard. My dad is deceased, so he was like a dad to me. A very devoted family man, he’d do anything for his loved ones.”

Bass’ widow Renee Scott also held nothing back as she blasted Chappell.

“Whoever the person is who went in Ray’s wallet as he lay there deceased, has no soul and represents the devil,” Scott said. “God is stronger and he will find you.”
