On Monday, U.S. Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe said, “China poses a greater national security threat to the U.S. than any other nation – economically, militarily and technologically. That includes threats of election influence and interference.” U.S. National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien concurs.

In the latest update from American Intelligence, officials said China “prefers” that Trump “does not win reelection” in November. That is because the president has taken a tough line with the Chinese on trade and other matters. The Democrats share the Chinese strategic goal of defeating Trump. Could they be coordinating efforts on the streets of America and in cyberoperations facilities here and in China?

Director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center Bill Evanina commented on the election threat, “We continue to monitor malicious cyber actors trying to gain access to U.S. state and federal networks, including those responsible for managing elections… As Americans, we are all in this together; our elections should be our own. Foreign efforts to influence or interfere with our elections are a direct threat to the fabric of our democracy. Neutralizing these threats requires not just a whole-of-government approach, but a whole-of-nation effort.”

Evanina specifically talked of Chinese interference, “Although China will continue to weigh the risks and benefits of aggressive action, its public rhetoric over the past few months has grown increasingly critical of the current administration’s COVID-19 response, closure of China’s Houston consulate, and actions on other issues.” China “has harshly criticized the administration’s statements and actions on Hong Kong, TikTok, the legal status of the South China Sea, and China’s efforts to dominate the 5G market. Beijing recognizes that all of these efforts might affect the presidential race.”

But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi doesn’t believe American Intelligence and is still trying to peddle the Russian collusion hoax. Last week, Pelosi said the threats of election influence from Russia and China are “not equivalent.” Of course she did; if she admits a Chinese effort against Trump it doesn’t fit her narrative.

In a statement from his office, Ratcliffe further said he is “committing the IC resources needed to fully understand the threat posed by China and provide U.S. policymakers with the best intelligence to counter China’s broad and deep and malignant activities. China is concerned that President Trump’s reelection would lead to a continuation of policies that they perceive to be ‘anti-China’… Fair and free elections are a bedrock of American democracy, and the IC remains vigilant against the various activities by China, as well as other threat countries and actors, which seek to affect our electoral process.”

As the debate rages here the Chinese are actively working to subvert the American election process. According to a report released this month by online research firm Graphika, “social media accounts from the pro-Chinese political spam network Spamouflage Dragon began posting English-language videos that attacked American policy and the Trump administration in June. A video titled ‘Who is responsible for this national disaster in the United States?’ posted on July 12, called Trump a ‘firm and creative ally’ of the coronavirus.'” Not exactly convincing copy. Really, Beijing…you can do better than that.

The tone of the Chinese online propaganda, according to Graphika, “wavered between scathing criticism of the American government’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak and apparent sympathy for everyday American citizens exposed to the pandemic and the anti-racism protests” along with “scathing criticism” of the president from the Chinese on the virus and on race. Gee, I wonder who else is using that message. Is it just a coincidence? Is anything in politics a coincidence? You do the math.
