President Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign aired a commercial break during the first quarter of Super Bowl LIV that touted his important success in passing criminal justice reform.

The ad features formerly incarcerated non-violent drug offender Alice Johnson, who was sentenced to a life sentence in prison. Thanks to the First Step Act President Trump signed in December, Johnson was released from prison.

“I’m free to start over,” Johnson is shown saying on the video.

“This is the greatest day of my life. My heart is just bursting with gratitude. I want to thank President Donald John Trump,” she says as her family and supporters cheer.

Trump touted the passage of criminal justice reform as a promise kept on Twitter as the ad aired.

“I promised to restore hope in America. That includes the least among us. Together, let’s KEEP AMERICA GREAT!” he wrote. “Text TRUMP to 88022 if you liked our Super Bowl ad!”

President Trump celebrated when the bill initially passed by congratulating Congress on working together to pass the law, saying, “This is a great bi-partisan achievement for everybody. When both parties work together we can keep our Country safer.”

The First Step Act is the most sweeping criminal justice reform legislation passed in decades. Jared Kushner took the lead in putting it together and criminal justice advocate Kim Kardashian West met with the president to highlight Johnson’s case.

Van Jones Encouraged Conservatives to Take Credit – So Trump Did

CNN pundit and ally of Trump on this issue, the left-leaning Van Jones, said at CPAC 2019 that conservatives should take credit for “getting it right” on criminal justice reform.

“The conservative movement in this country, unfortunately from my point of view, is now the leader on this issue of reform,” said Jones in 2019. “Republican governors are being tough on the dollar, tough on crime and shrinking prison populations… They’re stealing my issue!”

“The conservative movement in this country… is now the leader on this issue of [criminal justice] reform,” continued Jones. “Take some dadgum credit for being smart. Take some dadgum credit for getting it right.”

On Sunday night with his ad, Donald Trump did.
