Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) introduced a new bill on Thursday that would make what she describes as President Donald Trump’s “Muslim ban” illegal.
Omar took to Twitter to release a brief statement about her new bill, which moves to repeal the Alien Enemies Act, a law that Trump used to legalize his travel ban.
“This outdated and xenophobic law is an offense to our values as a nation, which should stand as a refuge for those fleeing violence and persecution,” Omar said in her statement.
Today I introduced a bill to fully repeal the Alien Enemies Act, a 1798 law used to justify the Muslim Ban and detain Japanese-Americans during World War II.

“It is a perfect example of outdated immigration laws that are being exploited and abused by this Administration,” Omar added. “As the President seeks to expand the Muslim Ban, we must close policy loopholes that he can exploit to cause harm to our neighbors, our country and the values that we hold dear.”
Omar was referring to the fact that Trump is planning to expand his travel ban in order to protect the American people, something that clearly is not a priority for the Minnesota congresswoman.
“We must learn from historical mistakes built on fear of the other and embrace a fair and just immigration system by repealing the Alien Enemies Act,” she concluded.
The timing of Omar’s new bill was certainly not a coincidence, as President Trump is expected to reveal his expansions to the travel ban at some point on Friday, according to Politico. Sources within the Trump administration say that the announcement was originally planned for Monday, which was the three year anniversary of the original travel ban, but it was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The new version of the ban reportedly places immigration restrictions on an additional six countries, but does not bar people from those nations from coming into the U.S. completely. Two sources close to the matter revealed that the countries that are being considered for these restrictions are Belarus, Myanmar (also known as Burma), Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria and Tanzania.
“The travel ban has been profoundly successful in protecting our country and raising the security baseline around the world,” White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said last week.
Liberals like Omar have tried to make Trump appear racist for his travel ban, but race has nothing to do with it. Trump is simply trying to protect the American people from foreign powers that want to destroy our country because of the hate they have for the many freedoms that we have here. If expanding the travel ban is what it takes to protect Americans from attacks, than Trump should be allowed to do it. –
