President Donald Trump and Congress must “do whatever it takes to control the border” and prevent the latest massive migrant “caravan” from entering the country, claiming asylum and remaining illegally, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-Ga., pictured above right) said Tuesday on “The Ingraham Angle.”

“This is insanity,” Gingrich told Fox News host Laura Ingraham. “No country — imagine it was your home, and people down the street said, ‘I like your home. I think I want to come and claim I need refuge.’ And 6,000 people show up to your home and say, ‘I really hope you’ll take care of me.'”

“It’s crazy. We ought to adopt a policy that says to the Mexicans, ‘Nobody’s crossing the border. So if you don’t want to stop them coming in from Honduras, they’re going to be in Mexico,'” Gingrich added. “And I would do whatever it takes to control the border. Period. End of story.”

The caravan of an estimated 1,300 men, women and children set off from Honduras Saturday and is making its way toward Mexico and ultimately the U.S.

This newest caravan follows on the heels of another one that traveled from Central America through Mexico in April. Although some of those migrants dropped out of the caravan along the way and Mexican officials stepped in to detain others, hundreds still entered the U.S. and claimed asylum.

Trump addressed the issue in two tweets late Tuesday, writing, “We have today informed the countries of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador that if they allow their citizens, or others, to journey through their borders and up to the United States, with the intention of entering our country illegally, all payments made to them will STOP (END)!”

“Anybody entering the United States illegally will be arrested and detained, prior to being sent back to their country!” Trump added.

Former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) acting Director Thomas Homan (above left) told Ingraham that Trump must “throw down the gauntlet” and work on pressuring Mexico to perform its part in stopping the caravan before it even reaches the U.S.-Mexico border.

“But when it comes to this caravan, as I said the last time, the president needs to work on Mexico,” Homan said. “Mexico needs to stop them on their southern border, not issue them transit visas, and turn them around right there at the southern border so they don’t get to the United States.”

Homan argued that pressuring Mexico might prove to be more effective than directly pressuring Honduras and other Central American countries.

“I mean, we give these countries a lot of aid. But I think that the other issue the president needs to be aware of is [that] the remittances run into the billions of dollars,” Homan noted. “These countries get billions of dollars a year from their citizens who live in this country illegally, that send money back to those countries, and that amounts to billions.”

“That’s another thing we need to address,” Homan warned.

Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), told Ingraham that “there are plenty of ways we can put pressure on these countries.”

“I mean really — what’s the point to being a superpower if you can’t try to get a tiny little country in your backyard to do what you want?” Krikorian asked. His organization favors tighter U.S. immigration policies.

But “the most important target of this kind of pressure” is Mexico because the caravan is passing through that country, he agreed.

“Mexico is a much more functional state. It’s wealthier. Its government works better, which is why Mexico really is responding I think, to the pressure,” Krikorian said. He noted that the Mexican government is mobilizing a large force of troops and dispatching them to meet and presumably block the caravan.

Ingraham slammed lawmakers for their failure to act appropriately in addressing the caravan issue and preventing large numbers of illegal immigrants from entering the U.S.

“Congress has got to act. The president, I think, is doing about as much as he can here,” Ingraham said.

Gingrich praised House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for introducing a bill to fully fund Trump’s border wall. “Build the Wall” was one of Trump’s signature 2016 campaign promises.

“I think Kevin McCarthy has offered the best bill … to really do whatever it takes to strengthen the border,” for former speaker said, warning that the results of the border crisis will represent “the fate of the United States.”
