“Gosnell” had quite an opening weekend.

Though it debuted in only 673 theaters, the film made $1.2 million, averaging over $1,800 at each location.

To put that number in perspective, “Gosnell” crowdfunded its budget of only $2.4 million, and the $59 million “First Man” opened to just $16.5 million in over 3,600 theaters.

While “First Man” had an aggressive advertising budget, the creators of “Gosnell” pushed it mostly through social media.

Its $1.2 million opening covers half its budget and sets it well on the path to profitability.

“Gosnell” also managed to open in the top 10 at the domestic box office on Sunday, which is an incredible feat for an independent film.

The only movie to crack the top 10 over the weekend in fewer theaters than “Gosnell” was “The Hate U Give,” which is distributed by Fox.

“Gosnell” tells the true story of the apprehension and trial of Kermit Gosnell, a Philadelphia abortion doctor convicted on three counts of first-degree murder and one count of involuntary manslaughter in 2013.

With his clinic described by some as a “house of horrors,” Gosnell was performing very late-term abortions and using untrained staff in serious medical procedures.

“Gosnell” was directed by Nick Searcy  of”Justified” and “The Shape of Water” (pictured above on right, from the film) and stars Dean Cain (above left), of “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” and “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.”

The box-office success of “Gosnell” is a significant achievement culturally for both conservatives and independent artists.

With a story focused on abortion procedures, major Hollywood studios passed over “Gosnell” for years and this opening proves there was a major audience out there for this sadly true story.

The fact that the film was independently produced and distributed also shows how truly insignificant mainstream Hollywood is becoming.

One does not need to get the approval of the leftist gatekeepers in Hollywood in order to create and release a major film anymore. Audiences will find good art without the help of a push from a major advertising campaign and a significant budget.

If momentum keeps up on “Gosnell,” the public will no doubt see more movies from these filmmakers that are similar in nature and devoid of a leftist agenda.

That is a good thing, especially when one considers the fact that “Gosnell” has been receiving an incredible amount of praise from people through social media and currently has a 99 percent approval rating from users on Rotten Tomatoes.
