Actress Anne Hathaway Blasts White, Straight, Male ‘Privilege’

“I really needed this,” actress Anne Hathaway told a Saturday night crowd after accepting the National Equality Award at the Human Rights Campaign’s national dinner in Washington, D.C.

The event was headlined by former Vice President Joe Biden — and Hathaway said a speech by the Democrat at the event helped restore some of her faith in the current state of the nation.

“I think I’m probably walking around like most people right now. I’m pretty shell-shocked by what I see every day, what I hear every day. And I really don’t like to admit this, but I get scared,” she said.

“You guys just gave me my heart back,” she added about Biden’s speech, along with one from Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign.

Hathaway, 35, then went on a rant about straight, white male privilege.

“It is important to acknowledge [that] with the exception of being a cisgender male, everything about how I was born has put me at the current center of a damaging and widely accepted myth,” she said.

The actress continued, “That myth is that gayness orbits around straightness, transgender orbits around cisgender, and that all races orbit around whiteness.”

Hathaway, whose older brother is gay, added, “I appreciate this community because together we are not going to just question this myth, we are going to destroy it … Let’s tear this world apart and build a better one.”

The dinner attended by Hathaway was intended to raise money for LGBTQ equality, according to the group’s official website.

Hathaway starred in “Ocean’s 8” this year and was introduced at the dinner by her co-star Awkwafina, who referred to the actress as a “friend and sister.”

Hathaway is best known for starring in hits such as “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Interstellar,” and “The Devil Wears Prada.”

White privilege is something the actress has talked about more and more in recent months.

She also railed against it earlier this summer and blamed a vicious attack on it.

“White people — including me, including you — must take into the marrow of our privileged bones the truth that ALL black people fear for their lives DAILY in America and have done so for GENERATIONS,” she ranted on Instagram.

“White people DO NOT have equivalence for this fear of violence. Given those givens, we must ask our (white)selves — how ‘decent’ are we really? Not in our intent, but in our actions? In our lack of action?”

Her comments on Instagram came after a young black woman was attacked in Oakland by a white man — who reportedly suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar.
