Former Sen. Rick Santorum’s criticism of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was “just plain stupid,” according to former U.S. Attorney Joseph diGenova.

“I have to confess I have never liked Rick Santorum,” diGenova told host Laura Ingraham on “The Laura Ingraham Show” Tuesday. “I had an incident with him when he was a United States senator, which has forever scarred me in regards to him. He’s an arrogant, self-centered, pompous, sanctimonious ass. And what he said last night is just plain stupid.”

Speaking on CNN Monday following President Donald Trump’s announcement of Kavanaugh’s selection, Santorum remarked that “Donald Trump said he was going to energize the base with this pick. I don’t think he did that,” adding that “it just seems like, in this case, Trump bowed to the elite in Washington.”

Santorum, a one-term Republican senator from Pennsylvania, twice unsuccessfully sought the GOP presidential nominee but more recently has served as a CNN political analyst.

“That type of comment is so self-important,” diGenova said. “Who the hell does he think he is? The people, the base? Oh, for heaven’s sake.”
