“Twin Peaks” creator David Lynch believes there’s a chance Donald Trump could end up being remembered as one of America’s best presidents.

“[Trump] could go down as one of the greatest presidents in history because he has disrupted the thing so much. No one is able to counter this guy in an intelligent way,” the filmmaker said in a wide-ranging interview with The Guardian.

Lynch has long been an artist who marched to the beat of his own drum in Hollywood. His sometimes odd films have earned him a loyal audience — and he rarely explains ambiguous works like “Mulholland Drive” and “Blue Velvet.”

Though he typically stays away from politics, Lynch has acknowledged leaning toward libertarianism in the past. “I am not really a political person, but I really like the freedom to do what you want to do,” he said.

Though he endorsed Bernie Sanders at one point in the 2016 presidential election, he eventually supported libertarian candidate Gary Johnson.

Lynch has also shared his admiration for Ronald Reagan in the past. “At that time, I thought of myself as a libertarian,” he said in an interview with Reason in 2006. “I believed in next-to-zero government. And I still would lean toward no government and not so many rules, except for traffic lights and things like this. I really believe in traffic regulations.”

“Our so-called leaders can’t take the country forward, can’t get anything done,” he said. “Like children, they are. Trump has shown all this.”

He went on to say at the time that he eventually considered himself a Democrat — he wound up supporting Barack Obama — though he pushed back against the party’s love for regulation.

“I’m a Democrat now,” he said. “And I’ve always been a Democrat, really. But I don’t like the Democrats a lot, either, because I’m a smoker, and I think a lot of the Democrats have come up with these rules for nonsmoking. And I don’t think that that’s necessarily so bad, but they have to give the smokers a place.”

Lynch will no doubt receive heavy criticism for his words, but here’s hoping the artist continues to speak his mind. He hasn’t bowed to pressure with his art, so he shouldn’t with his opinions.
