President Donald Trump retweeted Fox News host Sean Hannity’s Friday tweet in which he previewed his opening monologue on the “deep state’s allies in the media” and the dangers facing the president.
Prior to his opening segment of Friday’s “Hannity” on the Fox News Channel, Hannity promoted the monologue and an interview with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), who has also been outspoken against the “deep state.”
“#Hannity Starts in 30 minutes with @newtgingrich and my monologue on the Deep State’s allies in the media,” Hannity tweeted Friday night.
During his show, Hannity took particular aim at the “Obama holdovers” throughout the government who are being “aided and abetted by the Destroy Trump Media” in showering the president with a damaging barrage of leaks while they push the ongoing Russia-collusion narrative.
“The unelected fourth branch of the government is now being aided and abetted by the Destroy Trump Media, all in a massive effort to damage and destroy President Trump,” Hannity said, adding that this is “insanity.”
“How is it possible that they dare to leak information almost every single day without any fear and consequences?” Hannity asked. “These people have now become a clear and present danger to this country and to you, and the things that you care about deeply.”
The president expressed frustration Thursday and Friday with reports of a “witch hunt” investigation into possible obstruction of justice surrounding his firing of FBI Director James Comey.
“They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story. Nice,” Trump tweeted Thursday. “You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history — led by some very bad and conflicted people!”
“After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my ‘collusion with the Russians,’ nobody has been able to show any proof. Sad!” Trump added Friday. “I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt.”
Hannity pointed to a Wednesday Washington Post story citing anonymous sources who claimed that special counsel Robert Mueller expanded the Russia probe to include investigating Trump for obstruction-of-justice charges.
“Now this week alone, we have seen unprecedented and potentially criminal leaks from the deep state to the liberal Washington Post,” Hannity said. “Now the liberal smear machine is masquerading as a news outlet in their reporting, citing, of course, once again, anonymous sources that the special counsel is now investigating the president for possible obstruction of justice, and that Robert Mueller is also looking into [White House senior adviser] Jared Kushner’s finances and business dealings.”
“This deep state, this fourth branch of government as we’re calling it, doesn’t care about getting the truth to you, the American people,” Hannity added. “And of course, the media, they’re the willing accomplices. Their goal is the exact opposite here. They are selectively leaking information, intelligence information, that is meant to damage in this case the president of the United States of America, which is exactly what we have been seeing now almost on a nightly basis.”
The Fox News host claimed the major news outlets citing unnamed sources “have all gotten it wrong on this issue” and “should have zero credibility” with the American people.
“So what we’re seeing now is this unelected fourth branch of government looking for retribution, overturning a duly elected election,” Hannity said. “Here’s the problem: whoever is leaking this information to the media, they need to be arrested, they need to be prosecuted. Every one of them needs to be put in jail. Why hasn’t every Obama holdover been fired? Why have the leakers, you know, not been discovered and arrested at this point?”
Hannity lamented that the state of political discourse following the 2016 election has plummeted to such levels of bitterness that it has created an “unhealthy” atmosphere that breeds violence. Pointing to the Wednesday Alexandria shooting, which targeted Republican congressmen who were practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game and critically wounded House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), Hannity warned that this was the culmination of the anti-Trump rhetoric and the media-abetted deep-state leaks.
“Now this week’s left-wing assassination attempt on these Republican lawmakers is the culmination of endless, vitriolic rage, animus, hatred toward the president and Republicans,” Hannity said. “I’m not saying anybody but this individual is responsible, but this atmosphere is so unhealthy.”
