“Like a Stone.” With Audioslave, Cornell, Tom Morello (lead guitar), Tim Commerford (bass and backing vocals), and Brad Wilk (drums) created a pure rock sound that unfortunately has mostly died off in popular music today. Songs such as “Like a Stone” helped set them apart. Cornell, however, was an artist who didn’t stop challenging himself, so he would cover his own bands’ songs in solo outings in an attempt to do something even better and more exciting than he did originally. He accomplished it with this live performance for AOL of “Like a Stone.” In this stripped-down version, the lyrics come alive and have far more power. The way Cornell paces himself through the song shows a true master experimenting with material he no doubt played time and time again.
