When you go to the gym, you work hard to get into that zone where you’re giving it all you have — in an effort to lose weight, feel better, burn calories.

Now a San Francisco gym opening in May is looking to give clients a burn of a different kind.

The owner of the nation’s first cannabis gym, Power Plant Fitness, claims to want to help people take workouts to new heights — quite literally. Weed will be part of the workout. The gym’s website says in boldface that “marijuana can actually improve your workout” and that it will help members “integrate cannabis into one’s daily routine of ‘wellness.'”

In an interview with Outside Magazine, Jim McAlpine said that while programming is still in the planning process, the gym will offer “cannabis performance assessments from trainers, who will then guide gym-goers through weed-assisted workout plans.”

“The Power Plant member will feel special and compelled to spread … our mission and brand to enlighten others,” the website states.

A Power Plant-branded line of edibles will also be available, he said, adding cannabis “can help get you into the zone, into eye-of-the-tiger mode.” “If you use it right, cannabis takes the things you love and lets you love them more.” Interesting.

What is tough to understand, even when many high-profile athletes increasingly admit to using the drug, is that the following conditions have long been associated with using weed. These are but a few. Let’s figure out how any of the following fit into a solid workout or healthy lifestyle, especially on a daily basis:

  • Trouble thinking and remembering
  • Dry mouth (cotton mouth)
  • Increased appetite (the “munchies”)
  • Faster heart rate
  • Slower coordination
  • Memory loss
  • Random thinking
  • Unsteady walking

Perhaps even more telling as to why members may sign up (and more gyms like may “sprout”) is this: In states where marijuana has been legalized for recreational use, “people want to belong to a TRIBE,” says Alpine on his website. “People want to be part of something bigger than themselves. The Power Plant member will feel special and compelled to spread/proliferate our mission and brand to enlighten others.”

It’s increasingly important for parents and guardians to discuss with kids the dangers of marijuana — and how to avoid it and make smart choices in their lives, no matter what “the culture” seems to endorse, suggest, or push.

“These pot people will stop at nothing to create and generate addicts, which they need to generate a profit — just like the tobacco industry,” said Phillip Drum, a California pharmacist and marijuana opponent.
