Trump Will Keep Using His Personal Twitter Account

Avoids official POTUS setup, uses social media to dodge and dismantle the typical political filters

President-Elect Donald Trump will continue to use his personal Twitter account, @realDonaldTrump, once he takes office, instead of switching to the official presidential account, @POTUS, according to a report from NBC News.

Trump has more than 20 million followers on Twitter and often makes headlines with his posts, of which there have been over 30,000.

Trump has more than 20 million followers on Twitter.

The @POTUS account was created for President Obama in 2015 — and he’s only issued 342 tweets since then. That account has 13.5 million followers.

In an interview with The Sunday Times (U.K.), Trump explained the value of Twitter for him as president. “I’ve got 46 million people right now — that’s a lot, that’s really a lot — but 46 million — including Facebook, Twitter and you know, Instagram, so when you think that you’re 46 million there, I’d rather just let that build up and just keep it @realDonaldTrump, it’s working. And the tweeting, I thought I’d do less of it, but I’m covered so dishonestly by the press — so dishonestly — that I can put out Twitter — and it’s not 140, it’s now 280 — I can go bing bing bing … and they put it on and as soon as I tweet it out — this morning on television, Fox — ‘Donald Trump, we have breaking news.'”

While Trump’s decision to keep a personal Twitter account may seem unusual, there really is no precedent or standard set by other presidents, since Twitter is still so new to the world.

Through his account, Trump speaks directly to both his followers and his critics, and calls out false or biased reporting as he sees it.

While Trump’s Twitter use has created some controversy, it has also helped him build a solid base of support and attention. The direct line of communication from him to the people displays a blunt honesty and a refreshing straightforwardness — something that has been lacking under Barack Obama’s two terms in office. Surprising, considering that Obama, a former community organizer, was painted as a man of the people who was going to bring serious change to business-as-usual politics.
